moot seems surprising normal. (Did I really watch the whole video?) Congratulations on moving out of his parent's basement.

chumbucket - 2010-12-06

4 stars for living to see the day where a serious lecture and presentation was recorded about LOLcats and Rickrolls.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2010-12-06

And after watching this, the great minds of the world visited 4chan and were bombarded with child pornography, stretched anuses, and gay men that looked like women.

5 stars.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2010-12-06

The forced anonymity makes for great political discussions alone. Since most modern conservative discourse is just a retarded wink-and-nod to cover up that most white people just plain old don't like not-whites, 4chan's news forum provides a refreshing dose of the honest racist conservative ideology that most people try so desperately to cover up behind cries of socialism and terrorism.

jangbones - 2010-12-06

the anarchy of /b/ is as close to the unbridled id of the english-speaking internet as you could possibly get

unfortunately I can't say I'm surprised at the firehose of misogyny and racism on display there

Jeriko-1 - 2010-12-06

/new/ has become the 'worse than /b/' as far as concentrated evil is concerned.

Yes, a board makes /b/ practically smell like roses.

Knuckles - 2010-12-06

I think it's pretty telling that he absolutely had no answer about the problems with anonymity. I'm sure he knew someone would ask "yeah but people are posting child porn on your site man," and he still didn't have a coherent response.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2010-12-06

I think it's telling that he's a shitty public speaker who gave a pretty bad presentation, but he does respond generally well with his "There's a difference between saying anything you want and doing anything you want". We have freedom of speech but not freedom of action, and people who post illegal materials are at least being reported to the authorities by doing it on a public site like this.

The real value of 4chan, and I wish I had been onstage to say this, is the raw expression of antisocial beliefs, exposing the schism between our private and our public beliefs.

standard8mm - 2010-12-06

I'd choose moot over zuckerberg.

Mother_Puncher - 2010-12-06

Eventually, there will be a movie about moot just like The Social Network. I have a feeling the film will be quite short in substance but padded down with /b/ related content since the first 30 minutes will be moot saying he wants to make an image board like the Japanese ones so he does.

Mother_Puncher - 2010-12-06

I'm also 5 starring this because it's a presentation of stupid 4chan done to be stupid but presented in a sort of professional manner.

crfog - 2010-12-06

Just as others have mentioned Zuckerburg, I too was reminded of him when watching this video.

Both of them seem to have this awkward internet kid thing going for them, yet they support two completely different stances on internet identity. Moot's all about anonymity and the empowerment that being able to speak your mind somewhere without having to worry about repercussions brings. While this model definitely brings out the worst in some people, it does occasionally bring about productive ventures. In the end, I think it's just a good outlet for people who have nowhere else to vent.

Zuckerburg on the other hand is trying to create an internet personality for everyone by defining them through who they know, what they like, what they do and any other personal information people will willingly (or sometimes unwillingly) share.

I'd love to hear these two sit down and chat for a while. Or see if they could work an a project of some kind together. They seem like the yin and yang of the same person.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2010-12-06

I think moot's approach is more socially productive simply because by giving a people a forum to shout what they really believe/feel/think independent of social mores, it gets us a step closer to people actually claiming some kind of ownership, on some level, of what they really believe.

Public discourse should be an open discussion of ideas, ideally, and those ideas and the logical assertions/emotional reactions that underpin them should be bared open to be challenged. Now, public discourse seems more like some kind of punch-and-judy puppet show where a puppet labelled "FREE MARKET" is beating another puppet labelled "SOCIAL JUSTICE" with a tiny stick, one controlled by a blob-like penis monster with racist slurs emerging and dissolving just beneath its wet purple skin, and the other controlled by a tribble with dreadlocks and a trust fund.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-12-06

4chan is stupid, but I'm glad it's there anyway

Quad9Damage - 2010-12-06

ZOMG HE BROKE RULES 1 AND 2!!!11$)%*)$

memedumpster - 2010-12-06

The inevitable Facebook/4chan war will be legendary.

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-12-07

This man is going to be in history books because he gave people a place to make racist jokes and post filthy porn.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-12-07

because those things never existed on the internet before 4chan

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-12-07

Fuck you, oswald.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-12-10

Caminante Nocturno - 2010-12-24
