Them's some nice hax you got there.

Udderdude - 2010-12-08

TAS is not hax, thanks for playing.

Wander - 2010-12-08

Oh man, at about 10:15, after he murders the game's logic for the third time, I'm pretty sure those noises it makes are confused cries for help.

FABIO - 2010-12-08

It's kind of neat seeing these sometimes, but glitch speedruns get to a point where you're just watching a bunch of static and screwed up shapes.

An even worse version of this is this guy murdering Chrono Trigger in 21 minutes.

freedoom - 2010-12-08

More like clip though level man, AMIRITE?

NewHeavenSalesman - 2010-12-08

This is really pushing the whole notion of "tool-assisted," but one star each for 9:25, and for the game still being more playable than the latter half of the Megaman X series.

kingofthenothing - 2010-12-08

My stars are just for floating on by the Guts Man stage. I died there countless times as a kid. I never beat this game without using Game Genie for infinite lives.

Quad9Damage - 2010-12-08

I could never beat Guts Man without the platform beam or whatever. Goddamn turning lifts.

yeahjim - 2010-12-08

My old BBS handle used to be megaman, so I'm down, but what exactly is he doing? Is this all stuff you can do without modifying the game?

FABIO - 2010-12-08

The people who do these glitch runs actually look through the code to find in-game ways of beating it faster.

Which makes watching these more sad than anything else.

fluffy - 2010-12-08

I was thinking of submitting this on my recent TAS binge but decided not to. Now I realize that was a mistake.

What I didn't get about this one is how he had the mag-beam powerup at the very beginning (or at least something that behaves like it). Or does JPN Rockman start out with that?

FABIO - 2010-12-08

He glitched through a wall to get it.

fluffy - 2010-12-08

Ah. I blinked and I missed it.

Ghoul - 2010-12-08

I don't understand the appeal of watching someone cheat their through a video game as quickly as they can.

memedumpster - 2010-12-08

This is a really annoying way to watch someone play a video game.

Coax_Current - 2010-12-08

Hardhats made of flashing letters throwing pickaxes.

To clear a few things up, TASing is a friendly competition to break the game using ONLY controller inputs, usually aiming for the fastest time. Cheats and modifications of the ROM are not allowed.

Sometimes the aim of the run is to exhibit weird and entertaining bugs, like in their Mortal Kombat runs, which I think have been on this site before. Some games have multiple TASes, one that breaks the game utterly, and one that aims for fastest 100%, such as getting every item in Metroid.

I'm not a TASer, but I think the tasvideos.org community is interesting. It's very collaborative on some of the most run games, with people all over the world contributing little tricks or bugs they've found in game to shave off a minute or frame here or there. Like FABIO said, in some cases they look through the code so they can engineer a set of inputs resulting in a particular bug. Nearly all submissions have details about what tricks were used in the game.

I enjoy occasionally seeing a NES game I've played utterly mangled and glitched using just controller inputs. I can understand seeing TASes as boring (most are to me too), but in terms of some value judgment on the time and effort spent, this not much different from all sorts of other "pointless" hobbies which we all have.

kingofthenothing - 2010-12-08

I appreciate your comment.

It's amazing to see all the ways this game was so thoroughly abused. There's so much "that's just WRONG" here that I can't help but be entertained. There needs to be a new word for "all the things I could technically some day be able to do, on paper, but I think we all know there's no goddamn way I'll ever be close to being that good", because that's what this is. I don't feel some sense of insecurity or feel somehow like my own skills have shamed. I'm just awed.

Redford - 2010-12-08

It's irritating that so many people would 1-star this video for cheating, regardless of context.

For what it's worth, all 5 of my stars are for the ending.

Old_Zircon - 2010-12-08

I don't really see what's so unusual about this, it kind of looks like any old speed ru

oh.

Spit Spingola - 2010-12-09

Holy shit they basically broke this game as much as they could without it completely failing. I feel like I just watched a guy run a marathon while blinded, shot at, and having his arms chopped off.

Kabbage - 2012-04-25

Wiley's castle is insanity.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-06-13

Poor, useless Bomb Man. Megaman doesn't even respect him enough to actually fight him, even for the Wily Castle "rematch".
