Garfield is one of those artless husks of pop culture that occasionally surprises with a moment of genuine entertainment.

Crunchy Frog - 2011-02-11

The Garfield and Friends cartoon had much better people than it deserved. They had veteran animation director Tom Ray, who had directed Bugs Bunny in the 50's and 60's, the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon in the 80's, and would go on to direct several seasons of The Transformers, and a few episodes of Tiny Toons. The lead writer was Mark Evanier, probably best known as the co-author of the Groo the Wanderer comic.

That and it really wasn't half-bad for a low-rent kids cartoon.

Also, I still tell people that there is no Wyoming.

Billy the Poet - 2011-02-11

That's the only thing I remember from this show.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-02-11

Actually, the show was pretty good. It was light-years beyond the comic strip. I, too, doubt the existence of Wyoming. I also refer to any gemstone of sufficient size as "the Klopman Diamond."

Spit Spingola - 2011-02-11

Yeah, I loved this show when I was a kid. It wasn't edgy or subversive like Pee-Wee or Ren & Stimpy but it usually wasn't annoying or dying to be trendy either, just trying to entertain. I just wish Lorenzo Music was still around.

I've noticed in some of the new stuff that Garfield now opens his mouth when he speaks. Who let that happen? It's wrong!

thebaronsdoctor - 2011-02-11

This show was a lot better than it had any right to be.

And I've nejoyed it a lot more ever since I found out that the episodes featuring the Buddy Bears were head writer Mark Evanier's way of making fun of his horrible experiences working on the Dungeon's and Dragons cartoon

Tom Collins - 2011-02-11

This show was like TV comfort food, and I guess there's nothing wrong with that.

CIWB - 2011-02-12

The cartoon was good, and the holiday specials (I'm thinking of Halloween and the episode with Jon's grandma) were pretty awesome, too.

Garfield gets shit on too much. True, now it's just Jim Davis's money factory, but there's some quality stuff among the mountains of material that have been made over the past 30 years.

Xenocide - 2011-02-12

The secret to this show was that Jim Davis had nothing to do with it. Instead it got a writing staff who actually explored the potential of having a cartoon with a lazy amoral dick as the star.

I'm amazed that there are people who still actually believe in Wyoming.

Redford - 2011-02-12

I still think the best thing to come out of Garfield is "Garfield minus Garfield", though this is a close second place.

Kilo147 - 2011-02-20

This is for Garcet and his steadfast faith that there is no Wyoming. I have your new ringtone.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2011-02-11

But now the question must be asked.

Would this be better without Garfield?

Redlof - 2011-02-11

I wonder how many other ideas the Drew Carey show stole from garfield.

Billy the Poet - 2011-02-11

Odie speaks using his mouth, but makes semi-intelligible animals sounds.

Garfield doesn't use his mouth, but we can understand him in conversational English.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-02-11

I want them to re-air the episode where Jon buries Lyman's corpse in the back yard.

Cube - 2011-02-11

I'm just waiting for this episode of The Simpsons!

fedex - 2011-02-11

and then Family Guy

Tom Collins - 2011-02-11

I'm looking forward to how the future will remember Family Guy: the edgiest thing in edgy town, or a hit and miss postmodernism pastiche of lowbrow culture!

Words!

pastorofmuppets - 2011-02-11

Don't worry Kermit, happiness is a cigar called Hamlet.

CJH - 2011-02-11

"deal with it" tag

Xenocide - 2011-02-12

Actually, the name of the cartoon is "Mistakes Will Happen." Your video title is aOH WELL DONE, SIR.

Wander - 2011-02-12

Nice catch!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-02-12

I hate Garfield, mostly. This was clever.

There was one other episode that made me laugh, where Garfield gets the mailman fired and then the episode just ends and US Acres starts, only to have Garfield interrupt and say, did you honestly think we were just going to end the episode there? And then he fixes the mailman's dilemma.

Also, the song Banana Nose will always make me smile.
