Warning: Institute of Justice is a "libertarian civil liberties organization".

aikimoe - 2011-03-03

It takes a mighty strong knee-jerk reflex to watch this and be more scared by the people fighting this particular injustice than by the people committing it.

kingarthur - 2011-03-03

It's not knee-jerk, it's called looking at the organization's website and charter.

Granted, forfeiture abuse occur all the time and is incredibly reprehensible. It does not mean that an organization that happens to agree with me on one issue is any less evil or libtarded because of it.

kingarthur - 2011-03-03

Also, they get funding from The Cato Institute. Which spells K-O-C-H.

aikimoe - 2011-03-03

The K-O-C-H scare is not one whit different from the S-O-R-O-S scare. It's reflexive ideology at its most childish.

How else is that organization (or libertarians, in general) "evil?" Do they oppose gay marriage? Do they support the aggressive prosecution of whistle-blowers? Do they support the drug war and imprisoning people who grow their own marijuana? Do they support denying habeas rights to terror suspects? Do they support indefinite detention without a trial for terror suspects (and even acquitted terror suspects)? Do they oppose investigating the Bush administration's crimes? Do they defend the actions of Ashcroft et al against suits brought by innocent victims of false imprisonment and extraordinary rendition?

No, wait, that would be the Democrats. And who fights against all of those injustices? That would be the Cato Institute.

I am not a libertarian. I believe in a welfare state, universal healthcare, and public education.

But when people who pretend to be liberals can ignore truly evil things like this...

...which our White House is authorizing regularly in several countries, while pointing their fingers at a basically powerless group of people like libertarians, well, it's no different than Tea Party people calling Obama a socialist, or pro-military, pro-police authoritarians claiming to be for small government. It's a testament to willful ignorance.

The next time libertarians throw harmless people into prison or burn and blow to pieces scores of peasants, it wouldn't be grossly dishonest to refer to them as "evil."

In the meantime, I look forward to your "warnings" the next time you see a Democrat doing something decent.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2011-03-03

The Kochmeisters also donate to the ACLU so there's that.

kingarthur - 2011-03-03

Except most of the libertarians in this country are duped by individuals like Koch and the Cato Institute into astroturf organizations that claim to represent individual liberties when they most assuredly do not. They're the same neocon and white-trash-voting-against-their-interests bullshit under a shiny new banner. They are just as much, as evidenced by ANY libertarian candidate elected recently, as war-mongering and against individual and human rights as ever.

Koch wants to further his own interests at the expense of yours and everyone else's. There are several people like him in control of the interests usually identified as Wall Street and Big Business but he, for convenience, has become the face of the phenomenon. As has Soros. Left right dichotomy is largely an illusion economically but you can't honestly defend in good conscience people and companies who do their level-best to encourage people to not only vote against their own interests but divest themselves of their rights.

You're a fool and you should feel bad.

aikimoe - 2011-03-04

Suggesting that the Cato Institute is neoconservative, when they oppose all that neoconservativism stands for, is, again, no different than calling Obama a socialist. It's no different than saying, "Evolution is just a theory." It is divorced from objective reality and a clear indicator of willful ignorance.

Indeed, when it comes to civil liberties and foreign policy, libertarians - like those at Cato, as opposed to politicians who are rarely anything other than what they believe they need to be in order to get elected - are more liberal than Democrats. Neoconservatives have much more in common with Obama (since he defends and continues the policies of the previous administration) than they do with the Cato Institute.

I know that it's easier to call me a fool than it is to admit the objective, documented fact that Obama and the Democrats are imprisoning harmless people and killing innocent civilians, but I hope you can summon the courage to ask yourself how many lives are being destroyed - right now - by libertarians (then again, since you believe the opposite of the documented truth regarding their positions on civil liberties and foreign policies, maybe you should consult an outside source, instead of asking yourself).

Despite my many disagreements with them, libertarians would never do this...

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/closeread/2011/03/nine-b oys-and-a-war.html

...but, hey, they aren't your relatives, right? They aren't even American! Maybe if our government was threatening to end the collective bargaining rights of Afghan children, instead of only blowing them to pieces, their parents collecting their body parts strewn about the countryside, maybe then you'd give a damn about them.

Ignoring the evil committed by your people in power, while pretending that a small, relatively powerless group of individuals is doing something bad somewhere, is what being a conservative is all about.

Look, if you actually think that libertarians are for the wars and oppose civil rights, then this is kind of like discussing geology with a young-earth creationist. It's a waste of time.
