From what I understand this is pretty common procedure worldwide; they do the same thing in the Colorado Rockies. This makes it no less amusing when they place the cannon a little too close.
In the Cascades as well.
The proper response to a massive, fast-moving wall of snow, is to nervously shuffle backwards a little.
