So in other words, when a movie like Dumb and Dumber or Jackass comes out, it means that Lawrence of Arabia or The Godfather no longer exist.

I never said anything about the quality of the game itself, I said it's the attitude towards criticism that is hypocritical; if the cinemaphile community dismissed any criticism towards Dumb and Dumber or Jackass with "geez, it's just a movie! Quit taking it so seriously!" then it might be comparable.

This thread is awesome. There are no video game equivalents to cinematic and literary masterpieces. There has never been a video game as good as the best of movies.

Sadly I have to agree with memedumpster. We're not there yet. I think someday we will get there, but not yet.

The games everyone points to as masterpieces like Bioshock and Fallout are still just some guy running around with a gun in really pretty environments blowing up people's heads.

Quit getting so worked out about videogames. Really, i miss the days when we could just talk about a game and not jump into a "BUT IS IT ART?" debate. Most "gamers" and video game "journalists" have no clue of what they're talking about, so don't take them seriously either.

While I think there are a lot of creativity in video games, I agree with the sentiment that it's still too early to call video games art. And if a game is to be measured as art, it should be by how clever and insightful the medium's own base characteristic - interactivity - is handled in it.
