ps I'm sorry I made fun of her now. :( She is actually donating all of the proceeds to tsunami victims and her school.

Quad9Damage - 2011-04-04

It seems like every other comment made on her video is some closet pedophile saying she should be raped and murdered. It's just a reminder of how shitty/disgusting people can be. But if she's really donating her royalties to a good cause, that makes her an awesome person and she should be commended for that.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-04-04

Now I hope she really does become famous, legitimately so that is.

fluffy - 2011-04-04

The song is terrible but it's really a symptom of a completely broken music industry, and it's both ridiculous how badly people have treated her and amazingly uplifting how she's just shrugged it off and made the best of it all. She might not be a good musician but so far she's shaping up to be a decent human being, and that's much more important.

takewithfood - 2011-04-04

Exactly how I feel, only more eloquent.

dueserpenti - 2011-04-04

Rebecca Black has as much to do with the music industry as keyboard cat; what a dumb thing to say.

dueserpenti - 2011-04-04

Seriously, this girl didn't get a record deal. Her parents shelled out some money for her to get a vanity music video made. You blaming the "music industry" for this is like blaming the "publishing industry" because people go to Kinko's to make poetry chapbooks. It's a little girl sticking her head in the cardboard cutout of the pop star and having her picture taken, not the decline of western civilization.

spikestoyiu - 2011-04-04

Just separate the song from the performer. She seems like a nice girl, and the fact that she's donating what little profit she'll probably see from this to charity is great, but nobody should let that interfere with the harmless, stupid fun of the song for the thirty or so seconds it takes before you're totally sick of it.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-04-04

True, this is the music equivalent of going to one of those mall photo studios, but the industry is broken.

I heard a story on NPR about a music producer. He went through the steps of creating a hit song for the pop charts. While the end result was a listenable piece of fluff, the procedure sounded like an assembly line where various people were brought in to tweak parts of a song that half of them didn't even bother to read the lyrics from. The worst was when they sent the bridge to a guy who specializes in adding those insipid raps to songs, much as how romantic sub-plots are grafted onto movies, regardless of genre.

It shouldn't be too long until music is written by algorithm, rather than by people who want to make something that might even slightly resemble art.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-04-04

Hey, Kleenex, go look up Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid.

Syd Midnight - 2011-04-05

Also KLF's "The Manual".

Innocent Bystander - 2011-04-04

Oh snappington.

misterbuns - 2011-04-04

"dickless mulings" what a great set of words.

dbtng - 2011-04-04

Perhaps it was "dickless mewlings"?

Samisyosam - 2011-04-04

This was pretty much my reaction to the video when it showed up. If something sucks, you're supposed to ignore it... not turn the creator into a superstar.

In a bomb-proof vault 20 stories below the surface, a boardroom full of entertainment industry executives have finalized the blueprints for an entire market based off of train wrecks. The latest pop music craze is to manufacture crap so crappy that it makes you bitch about it. And every time you bitch about it openly, they get a dollar.

This Rebecca Black incident was just a mistake. The next ones won't be.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-04-04

Points to Brooker for his analysis, but his delivery is just... meh.

And he always looks like he's wearing one of Donald Trump's toupees to me.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-04-04

I thought the line "as you pass these to customers who accurately look at you like you're nothing..." was excellent.

The McK - 2011-04-04

Something happened to his hair after his accident last year and it drives me bananas.

I'd managed to keep to my Friday virginity until today. I'm glad it was Charlie who broke me in.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-04-04

The song was bad in a hilarious way but I can't see why some people got THAT mad about it. It was an innocent song about typical sheltered 13 year old shit. It's not like she wrote a song about murdering gays min explicit detail or a message saying all minorities should be shaved, sterilized and burned alive. I didn't know people were reacting this way and I can't figure out why. The Beiber fans make sense because rabid 9 year old girls with a crush on an unobtainable pop star that makes them feel tingly in parts they can't understand yet turns them into psychotic assholes.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-04-04

Psst. She didn't write the song. A vanity music-video company gave it to her after her parents paid them to make a music video for her. Even she thinks it's pointless and banal, and that very empty-headedness is what's made the song a phenomenon.

It's like a theater prop chair is being presented as fine furniture.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-04-04

Remember when you were a young boy and it was fun to hate boy bands like New Kids on the Block and N'Sync?

Remember how you grew out of it?

Some people didn't.

That's what happened.

tamago - 2011-04-05

The hate piled on this kid was quite baffling. It's as if those people forgot they were once 13. And 13 year olds do some pretty lame and awkward shit. I should know. I was 13 once.

That's also cool about her donating to the relief effort in Japan. Kudos to her for that.

Hooker - 2011-04-05

Many poeTV members expressing bafflement at how something hilariously awful can become popular.

StanleyPain - 2011-04-05

I'm not a supporter of bullying the girl, but people, even teenagers, need to take some fucking responsibility for the shit they are vomiting onto internet sites that are viewed by literally millions of people per day.

dueserpenti - 2011-04-05

Now the question is, does he have the self-awareness to see the irony in his proclamation?

Syd Midnight - 2011-04-05

If he'd also 5 starred it, I'd have said "yes".

Get used to it people, it's the 21st century, when a tween makes up a goofy skit or sings into a hairbrush like you did, they put it on the internet because you would have if you could have.

If I ever run across an old tape of some stupid shit I made while playing with a tape recorder when I was a tween, I'd have half a mind to put it on Youtube, because that's what I would have wanted, because that's the kinda dumb thing kids do.

From all the way back in 1985 I hear myself saying "Massive! Do it doitdotidoit!!" and my mom saying "Don't you dare, some sicko pervert would hunt you down." Yeah, but I'm big enough to kick his ass now mom!
