If the idiot working class in America actually does rise up, it will be in support of their malefactors.

Cena_mark - 2011-04-12

liberal angst

longwinded - 2011-04-12

whereas the Tea Party - that was real

Baldr - 2011-04-12

Premium cable is an odd medium of choice for reaching the impoverished masses.

BillLumbergh - 2011-04-12

i think i saw this on youtube as well

CharlesSmith - 2011-04-12

He's not actually trying to stir up the masses. He's just pointing out amusing true things to entertain the impotent intellectual class.

jangbones - 2011-04-12

Y'know, Maher is also pretty wealthy. His point is still valid.

But, no, the poors will never do anything to the riches. The riches keep bamboozling them with manufactured resentments.

phalsebob - 2011-04-12

So what is trailer park conservatives won't actually be stirred to action. Can anything pierce their thick skulls? Might as well laugh at them, they will not change.

phalsebob - 2011-04-12

Actually, it's a bit depressing.

jangbones - 2011-04-12

Poorer conservatives are more afraid of government helping minorities than they are of plutocrats robbing America blind.

This strange fact is an enormous part of the American political landscape and has been for the past fifty years.

I've said it before, but I still maintain that demographics will make these loony trends more and more pronounced in the next ten years. With Boomers reaching their sixties and seventies in the next decade, who knows what havok the GOP will soon wreak on this country. Sure Obama will get reelected in 2012, but after that, get ready to flee the country, especially if you ain't a caucasian Christian.

Anaxagoras - 2011-04-12

But I am a Caucasian! And I can pretend to be a Christian. The next several years are lookin' pretty sweet.

Besides, the tears of poor Conservatives are nourishment to me, and I know I'm going to be eating pretty well in the next couple decades as everything they voted for comes to bite them on the ass.

SolRo - 2011-04-12

Thank goodness im whiter than the average american...now I just need to go buy me a crucefix and a jesus bumper sticker.

What should I pretend to be most outraged by, gay marriage or muslims?

Anaxagoras - 2011-04-12

Trick question. You should be outraged about gay muslims wanting to marry and impose sharia socialism upon us all.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-04-12

Why do something about actual problems, or even recognize them, when you can listen to radio guys rail against the scapegoat of the week?

And did you know that every year Planned Parenthood spends eleventy billion dollars in federal money on abortions? WHATEVER HAPPENED TO DEAR OLD UNCLE SAM

themilkshark - 2011-04-12

This was very well written comedy and all of his points are 100% true. Maher is a gem, a glorious gem.

chumbucket - 2011-04-12

yeah true but still not funny

TheOtherCapnS - 2011-04-12

He's always been far more correct than he is funny.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-04-12

Except when it comes to medicine. Maher is a big proponent of "alternate medicine," he's somewhat of an anti-vaxxer (claiming that you're 'injecting yourself with sickness') and a luddite when it comes to actual medical technology (he had to be corrected by Bill "diagnose Terri Schiavo by videotape" Frist, among others, when he claimed that cancer treatment hadn't made any headway in the past fifty years).

He also talks over his guests too much. The scripted parts of his show, like this, are the only ones really worth watching. His guests are just there for him to abuse, unlike the ones on the Daily Show, where at least if Jon disagrees with them, he lets them keep talking, tying their own noose and hanging themselves without any help.

TheOtherCapnS - 2011-04-12

Oh, he says stupid shit all the time, even about subjects other than medicine. The whole having a live show thing doesn't always play in his favor... But I agree, he has great writers, even if I find his delivery to be incredibly shrill. My point was that I've never found him extremely funny.

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-04-12

Quick, someone call the perennially unemployed Joe The Plumber. I'm sure for 50 bux he'll offer a stirring rebuttal.

kingofthenothing - 2011-04-12

Don't worry, Bill. I'm upping my supervillain game.

Samisyosam - 2011-04-12

Man, I don't care if it's Bill Maher or even Carlos Jokethief Mencia. I just want to hear people say this more often with a dead serious tone that quiets the room.

Every other news broadcast of GE's tax writeoffs comes across as "In other news, GE didn't pay any taxes at all. Aint that something? After the break we've got a video of a turtle found in south carolina that looks like Mickey Rourke. Stay tuned!"

Anaxagoras - 2011-04-12

Oooh! A turtle that looked like Mickey Rourke? I bet that's one bad-ass turtle! Tell me more!

kingarthur - 2011-04-12

I hear ya, sam.

fatatty - 2011-04-12

Personally I'm on the true and somewhat funny side.

I'm glad to see him and Stewart both making cases for class warfare. They may be preaching to a choir that is unlikely to take action but this kind of rhetoric was unheard of from mainstream liberals even a year ago.

I'd like to see a much less one-sided war.

poorwill - 2011-04-12

Why should corporations pay taxes? The employees and CEOs already pay personal taxes, and those are what pay for your teacher unions and food stamps. It's just cynical double-dipping.

poorwill - 2011-04-12

Haha, just kidding.

Desidiosus - 2011-04-12

I can picture people watching this, thinking about it intently, then saying, "Let's see who's on Dancing with the Stars!"

TheOtherCapnS - 2011-04-12

It's so much more insidious than that. Not "who's on dancing with the stars" but "what's happening with the dancing with the stars narrative"

fatatty - 2011-04-12

I can't imagine most Americans thinking about this intently. Or even having enough of an understanding of how the world works to build a context that would lead them the the anger they should feel about these facts.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-04-12

Why is it "reform" when a conservative does it but "class warfare" when a liberal does it?

Stop framing their narrative for them, you shitwit. Call it ANYTHING BUT "class warfare" if you actually want it to happen. Call it "Shirley Temple" or something. It doesn't matter. Just don't use the preestablished code words that Rush Limbaugh has spent the better part of 25 years hammering into their heads as red lights.

WORDS! THEY MEAN WHAT YOU TELL THEM TO MEAN!

SolRo - 2011-04-12

Yeah, dont use words that the right wing has demonized, use other words! Until the right wing demonizes those words too, then use other words! And make sure you keep everyone updated on the word change so they know that the new word means exactly the same thing as the old word but without being evil.

Bort - 2011-04-13

Guys! Guys! You're both right. Demonized words make for an uphill battle and should be avoided when you're trying to make a point, and should be reclaimed at other times.

Solution: call it "class warfare" when the rich want lower taxes, and "fair taxes" when we try to raise the taxes on the rich.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2011-04-12

Call me back when somebody who doesn't think western medicine is a lie says it

Anaxagoras - 2011-04-12

While you're waiting for a call from the perfectly packaged message, the rest of us will be listening to arguments from whatever source & judging the arguments on their own merits.

Guess which one of us will end up better informed. Go ahead. Guess.

joelkazoo - 2011-04-12

Can someone explain to me why "class warfare" is a bad thing?

jangbones - 2011-04-12

always better to solve problems constructively, without conflict

not always possible, but better

Bort - 2011-04-13

It's a term associated with Karl Marx and communism.

Fezren - 2011-04-12

Democrats are sounding more and more like communists every day.

And then there's the republicans.

I feel like I'm caught in a shit-vise.

fatatty - 2011-04-13

They're both a product of the overwhelming power and wealth of the rich in our political and financial systems. It's pretty much an inevitable dichotomy in our situation.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-04-13

The only way that things will change in this country is through class war. I don't advocate too many things the communists did in Russia, but getting rid of the rich elite that marveled at their Faberge eggs while people starved in the streets and died for the rich in the front against Germany in WWI while their rations dwindled...well, that wasn't a bad idea.

The rich are unnecessary at this point in our history. They are parasites. The only good way to deal with a parasite is to get rid of it. I mean, you can live with a parasite if you want to, as it drains you of nutrients and life. But it's more fun to watch it die.

fractured - 2011-04-13

What does he mean by "Detroit moment"?

Tyfus - 2011-04-18

Eat the rich. Period,
