What happened to shareware-type games, anyhow? There was a brief period in the early 90s where they were everywhere, then they basically diappeared, then in the last few years 'indie' games have stepped up as their successors. There is a lost decade there and I want to know where it went.

Doom happened.

Shareware games were usually level based. Doom shareware was the first 6-7 levels of Doom, and if you liked it, you could pay for the rest of it. Games today are not really episodic in nature so this business model doesn't really work. It would be cool though if there was some kind of Renaissance and people made more old school type games and released shareware. I think Steam may even have a hand in that since they often sell complete games for under so people are more willing to take a risk on a game they have never played if the screenshots look cool.

Today we have games on iPhone, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 that work kinda like the old shareware games. Instead of offering separate demos devs can create an entire game that is then unlocked through a micropayment. Of course the main difference between shareware and these modern games is that shareware was freely distributed while today's marketplace systems are designed in restricted environments.

Oh, and this game looks really horrible.
