asian hick - 2011-05-24 ACORN was one of the more than 30,000 community organizations that partnered with the census bureau to help publicize the event and emphasize why it's important to fill out the census forms. generally illegal immigrants, poorer people and minorities have lower rates of census form completion. since ACORN has connections with this community they seem like a natural choice to publicize why these individuals--and everyone else--should fill out their census form.
this somehow blossomed in right wing minds into ACORN conducting the census and thus conducting massive fraud like they did when they of course stole the 2008 election.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2011-05-24 She didn't say they stole the election, she said the right wing concocted the fairy tale that they did. It's one more way the GOP is trying to limit the votes of people who don't vote for them (in this case, the poor and minorities).
What they harped on and on about were so-called "fraudulent" registrations, like people registering as Santa Claus or Mickey Mouse. What they willfully ignored is that if someone fills out a form like that, ACORN and groups like it ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO TAKE THEM AND SUBMIT THEM. They can attach all kids of flags that say "we think this isn't legit" and the feds can disqualify an application on the same criteria, but that doesn't matter to the right-wing noise machine.
Add to that the fact that several judges ruled ACORN did nothing wrong, illegal, etc. yet still got its funding cut. I know some GOPers are proud of that, but it's the equivalent of getting someone fired by filing false charges. Not the kind of thing to take pride in, especially if one's party claims to be about Christianity, morality, or anything else that deals with being honest and ethical.

also, this shit is pretty ironic given that the census actually shifted power to red states (albeit mostly due to the growth of minorities in those states)

I knew some census workers. They said the surest sign of a problem house was, ironically, the American flag (with the absolute worst sporting some sort of "Freedom isn't free" or marines sticker).
