I only voted this up so someone could explain it to me. So explain, please!

Ursa_minor - 2011-06-19

I don't see any optical illusions here. Same.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-06-19

The simplest answer to any mysterious claim: She's lying. The buildings and trees are actually there, and are not illusions at all.

Smellvin - 2011-06-19

The description suggests it's just that the buildings appear to be floating in the clouds. The news report makes it seem like the buildings aren't actually there...

Charles - 2011-06-19

Same thing happens to ships on the ocean. An object beyond the curvature of the earth can be reflected in the sky and seen by an observer miles away.

Charles - 2011-06-19

Which is to say, the buildings are there, but they are not actually RIGHT there.

Ursa_minor - 2011-06-19

Wait what.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-06-19

I also would like an explanation. How exactly would this happen?

Ursa_minor - 2011-06-19

Oh, translation error.

The buildings look like they are on a cloud. Basically, this is a news story about Tule Fog. Yay.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-06-19

In that case, the "slow news day" tag is missing.

VoilaIntruder - 2011-06-19

Fortunately the Shandong Province tag is there, though. Gonna get some mileage out of that one.

Aelric - 2011-06-20

Hell yes we are. Shandong Province week! I declare it to be and thus it is so!

Meatsack Jones - 2011-06-19

Aye, go to Coronado during the fall. You will see it every night before sundown.

The superior mirage forms when cold air lies beneath relatively warmer air, a conditions known to meteorologists as a temperature inversion. In this condition, light rays refract, or bend, toward the colder (and denser) air -- that is, downward. This bending causes the image of the object to appear to us to be above its actual position because our brains assume the light rays have taken a straight path from the object to our eyes. The rate of increase of temperature with height (the temperature gradient) affects how the light rays travel from the object to our eyes and thus how we see the resulting image pattern.

^^^I think it's this.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-06-19

That's not nearly as interesting as what I'd hoped it owuld have been.

5 for tricking me.

Dr Dim - 2011-06-20

In Chinese the character for mirage is the same as the one for investment opportunity.

How does someone with that voice get a job in broadcasting?
