And somehow they all let the security guards/police/stormtroopers leave unscathed. That is reserve.

dododge - 2011-06-25

Note that the person recording this was *also* arrested shortly afterward, both of them for disorderly conduct and related things. The AG has apparently decided not to pursue the charges.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-06-25

Was it ever reported why he was arrested? The reasons for disorderly conduct? What was the meeting about? Why does that cop look like Ray Liota?

StanleyPain - 2011-06-25

So what's the story behind this? There's no description on YouTube and the comments are the usual "LET"S KILL COPS" and "JESUS IS COMING TO DESTROY THE NWO GANGSTALKERS COMPUTERIZED MAFIA" bullshit.

Burnov - 2011-06-25

Well, after reading the description its obvious somebody was bawwing to the cops.

Was it those hosting the meeting?

Was it some of the attendees?

Its difficult to say, I'm not really up on my taxi cab driving politics these days.

However I'd say some nutless coward didn't like the idea of that meeting being recorded and abused the system for ther own ends.

baleen - 2011-06-25

I don't think journalists should be arrested at public events, but it's reason.tv, who hate things like commissions and unions and anything that might violate their precious view of the free market. I would completely believe that the "reporter" did something extremely stupid and deserved to be escorted out, but I would also believe that the HEAD OF THE DC TAXI COMMISSION IS AN IDIOT. But hey, makes for good press.

This is also probably why the people who got dibbs on the youtube comments first are all profoundly rightwing and extremely stupid.

Go, reason.tv, go.

StanleyPain - 2011-06-25

Ok..found a good article. The story gets better. The commission purposefully held the meeting at a POLICE STATION.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-06-25

I love how DCTC chairman Dena Reed denies requesting that the cops "arrest or detain" the reporter, then basically admits in the next paragraph that she did ask the police to "escort" the reporter out of the meeting, which is the real issue.

MartinBishop - 2011-06-25

So THAT'S why all those black people were there!

...I'm sorry :(

Burnov - 2011-06-25

Well, there you go.

That's pretty slimy if you ask me.

StanleyPain - 2011-06-25

I love the official response:
"We're not sure what this guy was doing, be we are assured there's a reason he was kicked out of the meeting. We just can't tell you why or what for. But trust us, there had to be something."

SolRo - 2011-06-25

If it was a right winger filming, he was probably being disruptive behind the camera, thinking that by filming things you are allowed to be a jackass at meetings.

They love doing that shit.

They also like to use video for intimidation and to personally identify members of the opposition for harassment.

Wander - 2011-06-25

Yah, if he was arrested by the police, he must have been doing SOMETHING wrong, right? You dolt.

baleen - 2011-06-25

Well, he actually said the police were doing a great job and didn't harass him at all, after the fact. The person he pointed to for "who's fault it was" was the commissioner. This makes me think that he isn't an objective "journalist" so much as someone who is taking up a position before the fact, and that is representing "independent taxi drivers," and also "the government is bad."

I don't know enough about taxi driving to say that there should or shouldn't be taxi commissions or if it's too difficult to get a taxi license in DC, but I do know enough about reason.tv to know that the chances for bullshit are exponential on their end.

aikimoe - 2011-06-26

What has reason.tv done that's "bullshit?" I mean, what have they done that's dishonest, as opposed to what positions regarding the proper role of government have they taken which don't agree with yours.

I mean, I don't agree with them on lots of things, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't get treated like other journalists.

aikimoe - 2011-06-26

Doesn't look like the guys arrested were doing anything illegal.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/why-were-two-reporters- arrested-for-covering-dc-cab-commission-meeting/2011/06/23/AGtKl3h H_story.html

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2011-06-26

I submitted this because even though I don't know what down right before this, the guy looked genuinely shocked over what was happening. Also, everyone in the room became pretty upset over it, so I deduced that it was likely he didn't do anything to provoke them and he was thrown out for some petty reason by a minor official.

Which is just shitty no matter who the guy filming was working for.

baleen - 2011-06-26

We'll see. The independent taxi drivers didn't like the commissioner to begin with, so who knows.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-06-26

"We'll see?" Who are you waiting for to tell you what your opinion is on whether public meetings should be allowed to be recorded, exactly?

memedumpster - 2011-06-26

I'm siding with the majority of the people who saw what happened and immediately declared it deal-breaking fuck you bullshit. They didn't seem to be escalating it, they didn't seem to be using it as a platform, they were just pissed off.

BHWW - 2011-06-26

On Friday, a reporter for radio station WTOP attempted to ask questions of the folks at the DC cab commission

http://www.wtop.com/?nid=41&sid=2436309

"In an effort to get an explanation about the incident, WTOP’s Mark Segraves went to the commission office Friday and was thrown out by security. The door to the office was subsequently locked, and the lights turned off — leaving the entire cab commission office in the dark."
