Places of note:

The Shire - 0:00
Weathertop - 22:30
Rivendell - 27:15
Moria - 30:30

If you only see one thing, see Moria. It's so big that several rooms extend beyond the clip distance.

StanleyPain - 2011-07-24

As a Tolkien geek, part of me finds this exquisite. And, yeah, Moria is fucking amazing. I would love to see what these guys come up with with making Mordor. Even just part of it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-07-24

One does not simply block into Mordor.

Wonko the Sane - 2011-07-24

here, take them

Amazing dedication, but you're probably going to want to mute this. The audio is like a Let's Play fucked a Ventrilo server.

baleen - 2011-07-24

Minecraft is the most exciting game I've ever played, from a game technology point of view. I don't have much time to play games these days, but this is is the first game I've spent more than 12 hours on in years. Their project blows the roof off.

oddeye - 2011-07-24

I still don't get why people play this fucking game. This isn't anything you couldn't accomplish better with a pen, some paper and a little imagination.

Nithing - 2011-07-24

Or some 3D modelling software from 1994.

fedex - 2011-07-24

i just heard someone actually say "I just failed epicly"

and wanted to punch the screen

kwash - 2011-07-24

At least it's grammatically correct?

Also, awesome

Spoonybard - 2011-07-24

At least he didn't split the infinitive

Spoonybard - 2011-07-24

Wait that didn't make sense

Spoonybard - 2011-07-24

That's what it's like to epicly fail I guess

Spoonybard - 2011-07-24

oh shit

garcet71283 - 2011-07-25

The preceding four posts brought to you by Spoonybard.

Mike Tyson?! - 2011-07-24

This illustrates just how terrible the Minecraft engine is. And how stupid nerds talk on the Internet.

rastarat - 2011-07-24

We could be putting a man on mars but instead, this.

badideasinaction - 2011-07-24

Someone needs to make a minecraft-to-Skyrim dungeon converter.

Innocent Bystander - 2011-07-24

Nerd doesn't even start to cover it, geek is insufficient, dork doesn't fit... we need a new word.

Ursa_minor - 2011-07-25

Sperglord?

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-07-28

Seconded!

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2011-07-24

My experience with Minecraft stems only from YouTube videos. You mean to tell me these guys built all of that manually using only the in game tools? No third party application rendering doohickey thingamajig? All by hand?

Fuck.

dododge - 2011-07-24

From what I recall they do use some tools, but when they started the tools didn't exist and they're still doing a shocking amount of it by hand. Also the overall map is so large that the main terrain generator stops working. I think one of them estimated that to go from the Shire to Moria would take several hours at Minecraft walking speed.

At minecraftmiddleearth.com they have a live overview map, and even zoomed out all the way Moria is 3x too big to see. The map fizzles as you head farther Southeast so I assume Mordor hasn't even been started yet.

Old_Zircon - 2011-07-24

At one point in the video one of them says they've actually already made it so big the current engine won't spawn any more terrain for them, and they're talking with the developer to see if they can get that fixed.

hammsangwich - 2011-07-24

I don't know if I could get into a game that uses Atari Jaguar level of graphics.

spikestoyiu - 2011-07-24

We get it; you love graphics.

oddeye - 2011-07-25

That's like saying you can't get into a movie unless it has good special effects you fucking bucket of rancid pigshit.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2011-07-25

yeah, basically. In a good game the graphics are a proxy. They're there to fire your imagination, which does all the cool stuff! I remember how amazing mechwarrior 2 mercs looked in my imagination! (not to mention the olde text adventure games!)

oh yeah, btw what these people did is like some kind of amazing abomination!
