There's no cognitive dissonance. Other people are evil for suggesting their kids are better dead than infidels, that their country and ideology should dominate the world, and that they will engage in aggression to whatever extent needed even if it means endangering every innocent life on the planet. Whereas God said to Reagan that what he was doing was okay, so by definition it can't be wrong.

This is the single worst thing about religion to me. Too often people will say 'It's not wrong if God does it', and "I would do terrible things if I thought God wanted me to". They (like Reagan) are simply replacing the meaning of the word 'morality', with 'blind submission to an authority'. If I had to make a list of deadly sins, that would be number one.
