My cat certainly thinks he knows what its like to be sad. He seems to consider the awesomest possible day to be "normal", and anything less to be an intolerable tragedy.
I ran out of cat treats 2 days ago, and my cat is definitely... well not quite sad, but confused and disappointed.
It's those fucking mindworms.
