Truly, magnets are one of the biggest mysteries on our planet Earth. Where did they come from? How do they work?

No, magnets can't make a perpetual motion machine. It takes at least as much energy to pull magnets apart as they release by pulling together. The same goes in reverse for repulsion. There's no clever arrangement of magnets that can get around that.

Eh, actually I didn't think much of the eight year old thing because it's literally true -- I'm so nerdy that at that age I was drawing crappy pictures of levitating cars with a magnet on the back at just the right place to push it forward...

The actually dickery was trying to crush someone else's idea just as mine was crushed in science class.

I'm glad you guys got permanent magnetism figured out. I got stuck trying to understand in physical terms what the exchange force is and why it acts between unpaired electrons in ferromagnetic materials. Can anyone straighten me out on this?

I think of it as more of an entrance exam. If you don't like finding out how stupid and ignorant you are, you're going to wind up choosing pseudoscience anyways. The hidden truths that THEY don't want you to know etc.

Can I guess that this whole mess has to do with how the question was phrased? Bootymarch clearly knows what "perpetual motion" is (having used the term at all), so I'm guessing what he/she was really looking for was, "where is the energy 'cost' in this that keeps it from being perpetual motion?" Well, the thing is powered by a battery, so the battery will run out of power eventually. If you try to turn the motor into a current generator, it still can't generate more current than the current that powers it. (You run into another problem too: magnetically-induced currents flow in a direction that generates a counter magnetic field, so rather than getting magnetic fields reinforcing one another, they tend to oppose one another.)

As to the notion of "if it were possible scientists would be doing it already", while that doesn't hold up in the absolute, it does hold up pretty well in the case of perpetual motion. If scientists had worked out any way to beat the laws of thermodynamics, even if it were extremely difficult and costly, science would be on that shit. But at present the laws of thermodynamics still seem to be intact and there are no known ways to beat them, or even much hope of beating them.
