This has to be a character that he plays, every once in a while he's just a bit too aware of the absurdity of what he is saying - you would think that would diminish how hilarious he is, but it doesn't.

I don't suppose there's any way to really prove it one way or the other, but An Idiot Abroad finally convinced me that Karl is a real dude. He's just a little more sly than they give him credit for.

My impression is that it's not that he plays a character, it's that he's fully aware of his own strangeness and exploits it for maximum effect. He just makes himself seem clueless on the show, but the rest seems to be genuine.

The end result being that "The Ricky Gervais Show" should be renamed "The Ricky Gervias Sits There and Laughs at Karl Pilkington Who is Funnier Than Him Show, and Also When Has the Third Guy Ever Contributed Anything."

Listening to their older radio shows in which Karl was a producer rather than a character reveals Karl unmodified. He's not that different that Karl playing it up, just slightly more sensible, and the others spend more time poking fun of his homophobia.

The main difference is that on the later podcasts, when Karl tells a classic story, they pretend Karl's telling it for the first time and Karl acts a bit dumber than he did the first time around. For example, with earlier 'monkey news' it was either semi-plausible, or Karl claimed to be telling it because it's interesting, not asserting it's truth. Later he'd tell the same stories, but add a strange detail, and claim it's definitely true.

I've spent way too much time with their old shows on in the background. I still think 'Rockbusters' is the funniest bit they've done.

A lot of his charm is definately in the way he tells it.

I want to believe.

He's not exactly faking it, but his dumb everyday anecdotes make people laugh so he just lets it all hang out. He's self-aware but he doesn't mind playing the fool, so he doesn't censor himself.

That strategy usually results in an embarrassing trainwreck of a personality, as Youtube clearly shows. But he's mild and modest enough to pull it off.

Stars for Karl. Always.
