Really? All the SW nerds I hang out with (and considering I'm in the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, and regularly attend the SW Celebration cons, is a LOT) LOVE the Plinkett reviews.

I'm assuming the one who hate Plinkett were in that special group that Triumph the insult dog enjoyed mocking.

Any Star Wars fan who openly defends the new trilogy from any form of criticism, and especially awesomely smart and funny criticism, should be shunned and stripped of their plastic lightsaber toys.

Hard to tell about a number, but the ones who hate Plinkett are very vocal, and yes, very childish. Their arguments are of the most idiotic type: "IF HE HATES THE MOVIES SO MUCH WHY BOTHER WATCHING THEM!"

Yes, part of the wonderful nature of the original is that the mask is unchanging, so the conflict going on in Vader's mind isn't explicitly seen.

Yes, but Lucas has so little understanding of / interest in how acting works by now that he sees ALL of his characters as needing clunky expository dialogue so that the audience (of 8-year-olds and their uncles who have a codependent relationship with the original SW movies) will know what's going on.

After seeing the Plinkett reviews, it's obvious that George wants to make his movies "rhyme." Or, to put it in terms that George really understands, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V. He must have heard how people found the Vader "NOOOOOO" scene to be ridiculous, and he somehow thinks that if it is referenced a second time, it'll become "cool."

This is similar to the thought that one dog turd in a bowl full of punch would be "solved" by the presence of a second.

I blame Lucas's monumental collection of shitty anime for making him think over explaining actions and emotions is good film making.

i know it's a totally irrational train of thought and mostly something people say when they don't want to actually analyze a crappy movie, but the alternative is that he thought the original "NOOOOOOO!" was touching emotional catharsis as opposed to most over-the-top hilarious punchline in cinema history.

The reinsertion of Jabba the Hutt's scene in "Episode IV" for the Special Editions is the one that usually kills me. His size seems all wrong and too small compared with RotJ (where he wasn't shown as mobile, I might add), the "wow, this guy is a serious character" notion is gone as he's mostly treated like a baffoon in that scene, Han's hand when he gestures looks as if it's entering space Jabba's digital corpulence is inhabiting, AND the "step on the tail" trick they decided to pull...

I know people would probably say "Han Shot First" is probably the earliest defining moment that this series was headed for post-revisionist shit, but the Han/Jabba sequence - which isn't even NECESSARY to the plot, it's just in there as a fanboy wink seemingly - was it for me.

Nerding out for a sec: but Jabba was the earliest wtf change to me not just because of how clumsy it was executed, but that they have him walking around at all. Part of his character design/development in ROTJ was that he was this extremely powerful, yet extremely fat and lazy beast. He lounged around on a movable bed like America's fattest man not just because he couldn't move, but because he didn't have to. The extent of how much he was feared by everyone was punctuated by the fact that everyone moved for him...and he physically moved for no one.

Then he is all walking around talking to Han Solo...on some shitty planet...to take care of some rinky dink errand bullshit...it was so much easier to kinda skip that mis-step mentally when it was just some white guy playing the role.

Everything else was (Han shooting first...etc.) just a part of the slippery slope.

Actually, no Freddy film should seriously be watched after the third except New Nightmare.

Darth Vader was a villain though - and he was a little too pleased with himself after saving his kid considering all the shit he'd done up to that point. Maybe he really just threw the emperor down the random hole in the floor because he looked like he was having too much fun.

Five stars for making me think of the glory that is Tombstone and Kurt Russell's mustache.

As for star wars, lucas as skull-fucked it so much I don't even know what the originals are like anymore.

I downloaded the unedited (REALLY unedited, not even the 1981 rerelease edits are in there) versions to remind mself why people actually liked these movies.

I was never hugely into "Star Wars", but I have to say, the prequels and Lucas's little "fixes" have made me respect the original three all the more. I look back at "Star Wars" (I'm not calling it "A New Hope" because that's just dumb) and I have to admire how tightly it was edited, how the characters seem human and how they play off one another. Even at the end, after Luke returns triumphant and R2D2 has been fried, you can buy that C3PO is worried about his little robot buddy. None of which exactly breaks new ground in terms of storytelling, but when two robots' relationship seems more natural, organic, and human than that between Anakin and Padme, something is wrong.
