Another true story. We're on vacation in Arizona, cops pull us over in the middle of nowhere, claiming we were speeding. First question he has for us, "Do you have any weapons on you". We all laugh, and say "No, don't really need that on a vacation, ya know? But just out of curiousity, what if we had a trunk full of shotguns and pistols?". Cop sez, "Oh, that would be alright, so long as you told me you did". We're all a little slackjawed. Then he procedes to do the old "search your car" routine, looking for the real threat, MARIJUANA!

Now you might think a car load of strangers with a trunk full of guns would be something the cops might take a legitimate interest in. But you would be wrong there, because, FREEDOM! I suppose the police in AZ must enjoy getting shot in the face, so long as no one is smoking marijuana. To each his own.

Gabrielle Giffords knows a thing or two about it, I hear.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-09-02

Arizona is such an ugly place.

Burnov - 2011-09-02

It is a jealously guarded federal racket.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-09-02

I question the veracity of this anecdote.

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-09-02

Why? Buying and transporting firearms like shotguns and pistols was ( and still is AFAIK ) perfectly legal in that state. They run your license, and will know if you're properly permitted or not. This kid that shot Gabby Giffords bought his glocks legally; and in fact was traffic stopped by police hours before the assasination attempt. I strongly suspect the conversation went something like what I experienced. But I have no proof of that, other than that the record shows he was let go without incident.

Burnov - 2011-09-02

I should have clarified, the illegal narcotics industry is a jealously guarded federal racket, it always has been.

And yeah, the kid of shot her was a little thing I like to call: fucking insane.

One must possess something of a psychosis of their own if they are to believe that these people somehow outnumber the amount of rational, and generally law abiding people in society.

My bet would be on paranoid schizophrenia personally.

Every prominent case in which legitimately procured firearms are used in violent assaults it always involves somebody who is so completely deranged that they have no appreciation for the consequences of their actions.

In the case of Jim Roszko, he was reputed to have psychological problems and had already been in and out of prison. The man shouldn't have ever been allowed legal access to firearms ever again.

And even in that case I believe he possessed some that weren't even legal to own in Canada anyhow. So in effect punishing your average law abiding squarebear from buying a shotgun has no effect on captain crazy's ability to get a gun and blow away four police officers. It just doesn't and that incites fear and outrage in the feeble minds of some individuals.

Prohibition is just a gesture aimed at placating cowardly, uppity leftists that piss their pants at the thought of something bad happening, somewhere that may happen to them at any given time.

I can't say much about the U.S, even I think you guys are far too lax in who you allow to own firearms.

Where I live its a very serious crime to even have your firearms stolen from you, and that prospect alone is enough to keep some people from owning them.

Slumgullion - 2011-09-02

There are lots of people full of hate in Arizona. I live in Maricopa county, home to some of our country's finest pedigreed xenophobes. They revel in it. Check this out - there was a Republican fundraiser in Pima County that raffled off the same gun that kid used kill all those people and to blow Gifford's brains out:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/09/02/20110902tucs on-shooting-badger-pima-gun03.html

Gifford, of course being a Democrat put into the "crosshairs" shortly before the shooting.

sosage - 2011-09-03

Giving the group the benefit of the doubt, that article says it was a similar model gun to the one used, not THE gun.

Otherwise, yeah...AZ is like being on another fucking planet, especially if you're from CA. I have the shitty pleasure of visiting once a year and their philosophy on firearms is just the tip of the crazy and awkward social dynamics.

kingofthenothing - 2011-09-03

I'm usually a five star kind of guy but the cop died and that shit's bad form.

fatatty - 2011-09-02

I like how this cop freaked out less than the guy who got asked for a warrant.

cool water sandwich - 2011-09-02

It says a lot about everyday rural America.

Burnov - 2011-09-02

Interesting that you can see what seem to be actual projectiles flying toward the end of the video, unless I'm mistaken and its debris, but the trajectory looks too straight for that.

This is the stuff of nightmares for those involved in law enforcement, and I don't envy this part of the job one bit.

The RCMP in Alberta have had to deal with this sort of shit far more regularly than you'd think, being as that its Canada and all.

The problem with gun restriction advocates, especially in Canada, is that they fail to realize that people who pull this sort of insanity are never doing it with traceable "legitimate" firearms... or they're so insane that it would be an affront to judge the rest of the law abiding population based on their behavior.

Is there a backstory on this?

He was convicted and sentenced with the death penalty.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2011-09-02

If I had to live in northern candada I'd want as many guns as I can afford and then some.

SolRo - 2011-09-02

the back story is that your stupid assumption about all gun crimes being done with black market weapons is completely wrong.

go fuck a light socket.

spikestoyiu - 2011-09-02

The majority of firearms used in crimes are produced domestically and originally purchased legally. Most of these, according to the ATF, end up in criminals hands after people who can legally purchase firearms do so on behalf of people who cannot. Or "straw purchasers".

Burnov - 2011-09-02

Butthurt? :D

Gun crimes committed by firearms that weren't acquired on the black market are usually committed by a minority of crazy people. They don't care about the consequences and thus cannot be a metric by which to judge sane, law abiding citizens.

Unless of course you're some kind of nutless coward who believes we should all drive cars governed to 30mph because somebody out there might speed and kill somebody. I'd rather be shot than eviscerated or crushed by a reckless driver to be quite honest.

The amount of incidents with firearms involving career criminals far outweighs the number of insane people who are hell bent on ruining their lives. These people don't go out and buy federally registered firearms to commit crimes, THAT is stupid.

I don't know how you can make an assumption quite that ridiculous and have the temerity to call other people stupid. Unless of course your reasoning is based entirely on a desperate emotionally driven bias.

OOPS.

SolRo - 2011-09-02

Your dick still isnt being burned off by electricity?

Ok princess, you want to cite some statistics instead of being a retarded idiot making shit up?

Oh, and, in my view, making assault weapons illegal just so the random crazy idiot cannot get them easly is a VERY GOOD IDEA.

And I really don't give a shit about gang members or drug dealers shooting eachother with black market arms. I worry that delusional morons like you can buy an AK 47 with a banana clip and go shoot at cops or politicians you dont like.

Hay Belly - 2011-09-04

MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE JUST SHOT DEAD DID YOU FIND OUT WHERE HE GOT THE GUNS THAT'S ALL I CARE ABOUT

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-09-02
