Way to be free entertainment.

baleen - 2011-09-20

With any luck, their cocktail lounges will be set ablaze. Peacefully, of course. That would be entertaining!

ry0suck - 2011-09-20

"Aww, look at the cute little proles! Here's to you, kids."

Cheese - 2011-09-20

This won't end well... if we're lucky.

Void 71 - 2011-09-20

It's the French Revolution minus the revolution.

SolRo - 2011-09-20

Make the wallstreet bull into a brazen bull and dispence punishment accordingly (or indiscriminantly)

Explodotron - 2011-09-20

I think I saw Jack Donaghy on the balcony.

"It's after 6... what am I? A farmer?"

Binro the Heretic - 2011-09-20

Those are the smiles of people who know they will never have to answer for the evil they have done.

fatatty - 2011-09-20

More than likely. America's poor and middle class make just enough not to riot. But we're probably just another recession or energy crunch away from a real Class War.

The only war I would ever look forward to.

baleen - 2011-09-20

"Hungry mouths lead to Bolshevism."

SolRo - 2011-09-20

"Oh look, the commoners formed a rabble."

"Jeffrey, could you be a dear and clear them off the street. They are disturbing the ambiance"

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-09-20

I'm not sure this is the gloating so much as rubbernecking on the "swells'" part. Are they supposed to look scared? Because the protesters don't look particularly threatening. I support them but until they have set demands they are not a threat. They are a group of people waving signs and looking not much less affluent so much as more casually dressed than their opponents. Until more working class, comparatively conservative (not racist or homophobic), lower educated person can show up to and be respected at one of these protests, the revolution just isn't happening. I'm afraid they aren't going to win many converts and that's sad. Still hoping they last, though.

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-09-20

Fucking typos.

Randroid - 2011-09-20

A distinct lack of frothing plebs, you mean.

hammsangwich - 2011-09-20

As soon as the "conservatives" realize they boots they have been licking are the same ones crushing them, then maybe things will change. Until then, they will keep feeling sorry for millionaires because their overlords tell them it's "class warfare."

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-09-20

I'm serious. Right now it looks like they have the protesters that were lucky enough to get down there and camp and who are already savvy about activism. They need people who aren't lucky enough to have that kind of time. People who are desperate enough for a job that they can't just hit pause to go protest all day. People who can't get time off work but are still interested. Working parents who can't just leave home. They need to mobilize locally in NYC and get people down there who can show up after work and on their off days. Involve unions. Get a real mob going, and stop looking like spoiled kids. I know they aren't, but right now they LOOK like it, and that will lose them the media battle.

Shanghai Tippytap - 2011-09-20

Yeah, basically. until protests look less like some sort of patchouli-smelling yarn festival and more like a hundred million pissed off Americans, this is about as effective as pissing into the wind, which I would also bemusedly stare at.

seriously, these are daddys money nyu communications students. their thirst for change will last about as long as it takes to get a job that pays over 30k.

wackyakmed - 2011-09-20

With the current (probably underestimated) unemployment rate, that could be a long time.

Riskbreaker - 2011-09-20

This is clearly not making any monocles drop for sure.

Oscar Wildcat - 2011-09-20

Nope. Nothing anyone down there hasn't seen before. Al Sharpton used to lead big protests there; much bigger than this. Liberty plaza is tiny; it's usually filled every lunch hour just by the locals wanting to catch some sun. I don't think even that is full, at least by John Youngs photos over at cryptome.

I'll tell you what did used to paralyze the region for short periods of time. When the Yankees would win a world series. It would be impossible to navigate Broad and Wall when that happened. I'd estimate that's about 10-20 times the crowds shown so far.

gmol - 2011-09-20

We are ANGRY.... about ... something!
Can't quite pin it down, not really sure what it is...

..like money, trading...and corporations...and stuff.

Riskbreaker - 2011-09-20

Pretty much, i mean, they have the energy, but they need more focus.

baleen - 2011-09-21

Why don't you organize a protest about how fucked up our banking system and see how that works out.

wackyakmed - 2011-09-21

Right. The groups organizing the protest all seem to have intelligent, well-reasoned demands (Eliminate private campaign funding, re-enact Glass-Steigall, etc.). Surprisingly, this thing is drawing a fair amount of support for Libertarians online, along with the left. While a good omen for it gaining steam, this makes a coherent, unified platform tough. Probably isn't necessary at this stage anyway.

FreeOJ - 2011-09-20

We.. are.. angry.. about.. something! IDK

Ryo-Cokey - 2011-09-20

Not quite a "Sod Off Swampy!" but not bad. The bubbly was a nice touch.

baleen - 2011-09-21

Shouldn't you be raping your daughter or something.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-09-21

Here's hoping that the robots that can do their job much better than them wipe those smug smiles off their stupid faces when they hit the unemployment lines with no real skills other than golfing and a cocaine habit.

namtar - 2011-09-21

This is missing a "white people" tag, both for the bankers and the protesters.

misterbuns - 2011-09-21

Schematic thinking like yours is why Michele Bachmann has a political career.

Mr.Rogers - 2011-09-21

The people united have regularly gone down to crushing, "lets make keep-sakes out of their skin to remember how much we kicked their asses" defeat.

That's always bothered me about that chant.

Hank Friendly - 2011-09-21

the Bums always lose

memedumpster - 2011-09-21

If all those people on the street were starving to death it would be different. Human nature has yet to properly protest the conditions in America.

Night Train to Mundo Fine - 2011-09-22

UPDATE:

According to the Occupy Wall Street website, they're planning to attend a Teamsters meeting and mobilize marginalized communities. While I question the ability of a bunch of college kids to "mobilize marginalized communities" (I'm afraid they might just end up being patronizing, albeit earnest) it looks like people are getting their shit together.

Honestly, what they really need is some kind of coherent leadership. While I admire their approach here, everyone voting on everything is going to lead to a really chaotic platform. It'd make a lot more sense to have the giant group elect a council or something.
