A friend of mine wrote for the Spaceballs animated series, which was terrible. I remember this movie because I was five years old when my parents took me to see it in the theatre and learned the word "shit." Said it all the way-shit-home.
I really recommend watching Conan's Serious Jibber Jabber interview with Mel Brooks (and Conan's interview series in general). Brooks is 87 and completely stunning. Rather than being some withered old man who's faded from show business and lost touch with the modern world, he's incredibly energetic and doesn't seem the slightest out of touch. He's also got a remarkable memory. I'd love to sit down and talk with the guy after watching that interview, he's so damn likable and he's got to have tons of incredible stories.
In one of the interviews Brooks did, he said Lucas loved the script for the movie and gave him his complete blessing as long as he did not merchandise anything.
