The whole t.A.T.u phenomenon is so Russian. It's the crassest form of exploitative humanly possible.

Cena_mark - 2014-01-26

How did the "lesbian" angle work in Russia? Or did they do that after becoming more internationally known?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-26

I'm guessing they won't be performing at the opening ceremonies for the next Winter Olympics.

I don't know what state Russia will be in after Putin dies, but I'll be interested to see how it works out.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-27

If I remember my tATu trivia correctly, they didn't start marketing themselves as lesbians until after they went international. I went to school with a Russian kid who was very upset about this; he thought they were whoring themselves out and disrespecting their "art" by taking the focus away from The Music.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-27

Strike my last, I just checked into it, and it seems their time in Russia was exceedingly brief. Apparently they were conceived of as a "lesbian group" and intended for international audiences right from the get-go; sort of like the Village People, only targeted at straight guys.

Here's a very interesting quote from Wikipedia:

--------------------------------------

... critics have also targeted their former producer Ivan Shapovalov for their creation. According to Shapovalov, he admitted in numerous interviews that he came up with the image of the group by visiting pornographic websites, and other sites relating to pedophilia[62] He explained; "I saw that most people look up pornography on the Internet and of those, most are looking for underage sex, I saw their needs weren’t fulfilled. Later, it turned out, I was right. This is the same as my own desires. I prefer underage girls."[62]

Probably some of their success has to do with the fact that most homophobes are totally cool with lesbians.

Leviticus 18:22 : "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."
Leviticus 18:23: "Thou May watch Lesbian porn, for it is hot."

Japan gets T.a.T.u in their Snickers commercials, and America gets Bea Arthur and Abe Vigoda.

America wins.

il fiore bel - 2014-01-26

Bea Arthur? Where's that commercial?

Cena_mark - 2014-01-26

Abe Vigoda was in Good Burger. That's a great film and he was awesome in it.

sasazuka - 2014-01-27

Did somebody say "Bea Arthur commercials"? Canada had Bea Arthur doing commercials for Shoppers Drug Mart for many years from the mid 1980s through to the early 1990s.

I like that you mistook Bettie White for Bea Arthur.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-01-27

All white people look alike to me.

il fiore bel - 2014-01-27

you're a white people

ashtar. - 2014-01-26

Laugh all you want, but I think it's terrible that they put these brave activists in jail for protesting at that church.

★★★★★
shadow stars for ashtar's joke

gravelstudios - 2014-01-27

I see what you did there.

Cena_mark - 2014-01-27

But t.A.T.u. aren't in Pussy Riot. They had nothing to do with that protest.

Meatsack Jones - 2014-01-27

Well...considering their oreinta....nope. Not even going to take that shot.

boner - 2014-01-27

Has anyone made a supercut of serious-looking news people saying "pussy riot"? That should exist.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-01-27

Wow. This is indeed a new commercial. I didn't know T.a.t.u was still relevant anywhere in the world. I wasn't even sure they were still a group.

I'm very curious how they're received these days in their native Russia, seeing as it's one of the most homophobic countries on the planet with an infrastructure as of late.

Either way, this made me grin. I still listen to 200/km in the Wrong Lane every now and then. No regrets.
