So for those of you who don't know, NEET stands for Not in Education, Education, or Training. It's the clinical, state-approved term for "jobless basement dweller", and, increasingly, a self-designator used on the internet by NEET lifestylists and the NEET lifestyle curious. e.g. Wizardchan, that virgin pride forum Elliot Rogers used to visit.

It's a huge problem in Japan.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-30

* Not in Education, EMPLOYMENT, or Training.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-30

And as I told SolRo earlier, I would like to stress that I am not trying to pass judgement on NEETs, nor am I trying to encourage others to do so. It is what it is; I am merely interested in observing.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

"It's a huge problem... not trying to pass judgement"

EvilHomer - 2014-05-31

The government considers it a problem, for obvious reasons. Whether one wishes to assign pejorative meaning to that, is one's own call.

arbeit macht frei!

Gmork - 2014-05-30

In other words, the unemployed but not homeless?

EvilHomer - 2014-05-30

Pretty much. NEETs differ from the homeless in that they have homes and a means of supporting that home (usually parents and/or welfare), and differ from the garden-variety unemployed in that their unemployment is chronic and they are not looking, or have never even looked, for work or school.

Think Chris-Chan, or even an aspirational Chris-Chan-in-training.

5 for the homeschooled!

"let's be gears of society together"

woah dont sell it too hard there japan

if only money had never been invented.. people might have developed a society where everyone is self-sufficient and need not parasitize off others nor do slavelike labor at the demands of others just so they can keep living in their homes and put food on the table...

i never got why people ever linked housing to money anyways, its just a home, why charge people to live there.. the government wouldnt need our money if our country were self-sufficient, since they could in theory reset what the economy was worth without worrying about import/export and the like.. fiat money has value because the government says so after all..

but instead they carry on the tradition from the roman empire and medival england, through much tyranny..

they even make it illegal to not go to school.. not realizing that such a move is counter-intuitive no doubt.. people dont wish to do what people force on them, therefore they dont learn anything when they do go to school...

the assumptions of those who say, "go get a life/job" are actually ironic, since being a slave to society isnt worth the girlfriends and money..

its just too bad that this world centers on survival of the fittest, and not survival of the wisest.. then history wouldnt be doomed to repeat itself.. but i digress...

jocks, religious lunatics, war, and now bleeding currency.. aint life on earth grand?

Gotcha!

BorrowedSolution - 2014-05-30

What is it about stupid people and ellipses?? It seems like they're aware that their thoughts are trailing off into nowhere... but they can't seem to... stop to think... about... things...

ashtar. - 2014-05-30

they can't even get the number of period right..

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-05-30

I know many NEETs. I've been one at various times in my life.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

I'll be honest, I respect it more than I respect most career paths, even though it's a road I can't go down myself (despite the fact that I just turned down the opportunity for a /hr union job yesterday because I'd have to quit my part time library position and I don't want to work full time ever again if I can avoid it, especially not for Verizon, union or no union).

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

The Puritan work ethic is just one of the many shitty things the USA inherited from the pilgrims and can't seem to shake.

I doubt most people even know the history of it, but it still has a massive influence on American culture to this day.

tl;dr whether you're among the chosen minority who aren't going to hell is predestined from birth but there's no way to know, so if you stop working for a second or lapse in your morals* then that's proof that you AREN'T chosen. That's pretty much the core belief that the USA was founded on, even though nobody remembers anymore.

*like, for example, the perpetual trouble Colonial New England had with these same puritans routinely cracking and doing things like getting black out drunk and masturbating in public.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

The trouble with NEETs isn't that they opt out of mainstream employment and education (both of which are pretty hopelessly broken right now), it's that they tend to replace it with video games, Cheetos, chronic depression and the not-funny kinds of misanthropy.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

Which is partially on them and partially on SOCIETY, MAAAN (for real).

EvilHomer - 2014-05-31

"The trouble with NEETs isn't that they opt out of mainstream employment and education (both of which are pretty hopelessly broken right now), it's that they tend to replace it with video games, Cheetos, chronic depression and the not-funny kinds of misanthropy."

That's a good way of putting it, OZ.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-05-31

Yeah, that is a good point. I haven't had a cheeto in years, for the record.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-05-31

The spirit of Cotton Mather will strangle this nation to death. Dramatically ironic, considering it's the very thing he judged others for in life.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-06-01

Another problem with NEETs is that they've been stuck in a broken education system for most of their lives and have similarly broken ideas about the possibilities in the wider world. It's not just that their options are grim; they lack the perspective to beat their own path and instead lapse into feelings of inadequacy. Which makes it ironic that their platform is essentially "We're opting out of this whole stupid game!" because that inadequacy stems from the very cultural ideals that lead them into this particular holding pattern. If they could _truly_ rebel, they might actually get somewhere.

Okay, I'll let my ass stop talking for now.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-31

File this in the case for NEETs.
