The homogenization really kicked in after Inception.

Hooker - 2015-04-30

You might call it the inception of generic action movie trailers.

Hooker - 2015-04-30

I will be here all week. Try the veal and tip your waitress.

Hooker - 2015-04-30

This is a one-star video but I gave it five so that everyone can read my terrific reply.

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

I don't mind the new trailer setup. It's better than the 70s trailers that pretty much give away the whole plot. It's kind of like bitching about how most websites look the same or how most video games have a point A to a point Z.

Nominal - 2015-05-01

Wait what? Giving away the entire plot (in precise chronological order) is the norm for trailers these days. Comparr the trailer for Alien to anything else done today.

Raggamuffin - 2015-05-01

The plot to all these movies is the same anyway.

5 stars for hooker's comment boldness

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

Yeah it depends on the movie itself: the only one of these I saw was Godzilla and Wolverine. In either case, I pretty much knew the plot going in, Wolverine because I read the Frank Miller comic, and Godzilla because Godzilla. But trailers in the 1970s probably would've given away that Bruce Willis is actually dead and Soilent Green is people, and the apes blew it up.

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

I mean, a perfect trailer that follows this formula is Star Wars Babies Or Whatever. Maybe the plotline's out there, but hell if I know what's going on. It's familiar setpieces and it's obviously a Star Wars movie and there's x-wings and stuff, but the only big reveal is, yes, an anthropomorphic thing in a fur suit is going to be in it, and he's accompanied by his friend, Chewbacca.

fluffy - 2015-05-01

Inception seems to also be where that fucking obnoxious GIANT HORN BLARE sound that everyone uses for their fucking sound design anymore.

Where did the stupid flanged ring-modulated hair dryer "a ship is flying" sound come from? Whoever is responsible for that becoming the de-facto sound for EVERYTHING MECHANICAL needs to be taken to task for their crimes against sound design. (I want to blame the first Transformers movie but I suspect it dates back further than that.)

infinite zest - 2015-05-02

Poor 808 synthesizers, forever associated with the bass drop, Kanye West and zero else.. :(

infinite zest - 2015-05-02

er.. with 303 synthesizers got here before Old Zircon could correct me hahahahaha

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-04-30

I have not seen a single one of these movies except for GOTG and Star Trek: Into Darkness and that made Star Trek suck again.

Incidentally, what's up with the kitty cat eyes on the flags draped over the White House at 3:36?

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-04-30

Those are Cobra symbols. It's from a GI Joe movie.

Either that, or they're actually making a Command & Conquer movie.

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

Those are from GI Joe. Or maybe they're making a C&C movie

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

haha

EvilHomer - 2015-05-01

It's from the Command & Conquer movie. Unless they did a GI Joe movie I've never heard about.

infinite zest - 2015-05-01

Did anybody NOT blow up the white house at the end of that game?

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-01

We've been around each other too long.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

It seems to me that this is the year that trailers just took over the internet, with every fan site having a long discussion about the meaning of the teaser for a movie that's coming out in a year. The studios have learned how to play the internet. Trailers used to be to get you to see a movie, now they're all about generating BUZZ. I'm sick of being manipulated into all these stupid discussions where nobody knows anything.

That guy - 2015-05-01

It's pretty easy to know which ones to skip if this is a problem for you...?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

I don't think it's going to be a problem in the future, because I'm aware of it now.
It hasn't really been a problem in the past, because I wasn't aware of it.

I'm just at the moment of realizing that I've been manipulated, and, in the moment, I'm annoyed about it. I think that you'll be seeing more of that. This stroke guy video (which I still haven't really watched) may be part of the inevitable backlash.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

You know what I'm sick of in action movie trailers? The loud metallic bangy-crashy-scrapey noises they use to punctuate every image, every line, and it's in every goddamn trailer.

The Avenger trailers do it fairly well, integrating with the action, building slowly toward a rhythmic crescendo of crashcrashcrashcrash toward the end.

https://youtu.be/JAUoeqvedMo

But it's really starting to be a cliche.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-01

That noise has been a cliche since the late 90s, the worst is when it's actually in the movie itself (which is often).

EvilHomer - 2015-05-01

http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=140465

The Avengers trailer was no different from the rest. I think you liked the Avengers trailer because you liked the Avengers movie, John, not because they did the bangy-crashy-scrapey thing better than other trailers.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

>>The Avengers trailer was no different from the rest. I think you liked the Avengers trailer because you liked the Avengers movie, John, not because they did the bangy-crashy-scrapey thing better than other trailers.

Well, when I was writing that post, I watched two trailers and paid really close attention, This Age of Ultron Trailer and a trailer for last year's Godzilla. The AAOU trailer was unquestionably more sophisticated than the Godzilla trailer in its use of the technique, but it may well be that, if I watched a bunch of other trailers, I'd see a similar level of sophistication. In fact, I don't doubt that at all. Both trailers had more nuance, and more structure than I'd expected.

When I say "The Avengers trailers do it failrly well", I don't mean anything outside of the scope of that statement, e.g. that other trailers don't do it fairly well, or that I liked it all THAT much, although, to be honest, I may be about to change my mind about the whole thing. I may decide that I love the way these trailers use rhythm to draw the viewer in. Considering the kind of art videos I make for youtube, these trailers may have something to teach me.

EvilHomer - 2015-05-01

Well, the reason it's a cliche is because this is a formula that works, sort of like how many Top 50 pop songs sound similar to one another. You do This Thing - establishing shot, wrrrow noise, voice over, crescendo, cut to silence, dubstep drop - and it works, because this pattern of noises and visual cues gets people's adrenaline flowing, and it leads your brain chemistry along in a manner that's conducive to selling action movies.

I guarantee you, Mr Holmes, if you took the formula Plinkett just described, and made for your channel a video patterned along his advice, it would... well, it might still look like crap, because you don't have a budget for cool visuals, but it'd SOUND good, and it'd get your subscribers on the edge of their seats!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-05-01

The Avengers video starts with the rhythm, and builds on that. Every image, spoken work, or emotion is tied in with the rhythm that starts out with sounds of the actual action and slowly builds to bang bang bang, three loud fast beat.

There's nothing new about this. Eisenstein sometimes used a metronome to time the rhythm of his filming, but you'll never find a better chance to observe how this is done than these trailers, which may be the most carefully edited two minutes that any of us will ever see.

And, of course, they're not subtle about it. Discerning the rhythm isn't a problem.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-05-02

Rhythm is a dancer.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-01

They kind of cheated by only using trailers for movies that are all the same.

Corpus Delectable - 2015-05-01

Exactly. Wait till they find out how old "Boy meets girl. Boy gets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy gets girl back," is!

TeenerTot - 2015-05-01

And don't forget to drop that bass!

The Great Hippo - 2015-05-01

I didn't like the movie, but the trailer for Hitchhiker's Guide still remains my favorite of all time:

fluffy - 2015-05-01

I actually did like the movie, and I'd never seen the trailer before. Wow, that trailer is fantastic.

fluffy - 2015-05-01

(I realize I am in a tiny tiny minority of Douglas Adams fans who actually like a movie despite its glaring flaws, but "not being the same as the original book" isn't one of them, what with the original having been the radio show which was also very different from the book, etc.)
