I feel like she sort of ignores that we would absolutely be able to prove it didn't come from a lab if China assisted in an open and transparent investigation into the origins of the virus.

It's terrible that the opportunists and xenophobes have weaponized these theories for their own purposes, but that doesn't rule out it coming from a lab.

the double thing deserves 5

Lef - 2021-06-12

think not thing, but it sort of works either way

jfcaron_ca - 2021-06-12

It's almost impossible to prove a negative. I think even if the investigation had been 100% legit and found no evidence of COVID-19 coming from there, people would still think of a way to blame China.

Do you remember the WMDs in Iraq? Unknown unknowns? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence? Xenos gonna xeno when they are trying to agitate for war.

Hazelnut - 2021-06-15

It reminds me a bit of Saddam's weapons of mass destruction. They didn't exist, US & UK intelligence made up the evidence, but if he'd just opened his damn doors to the inspectors we could have confirmed this publicly.

SolRo - 2021-06-15

There were inspectors in Iraq if I remember right, the narrative was that Saddam was able to move all WMDs, and vast amounts of equipment to produce them at will and short notice when inspectors showed up.

Which would be the narrative for wuhan I’m sure.

The fact it doesn't contain any genetic markers indicating it's made in a lab is a pretty good reason to believe it wasn't made in a lab.

Marlon Brawndo - 2021-06-12

Good thing China doesn't have a long, long history of killing vast numbers of people on a whim.

Lef - 2021-06-13

Good thing America doesn't have a long, long history of killing vast numbers of people on a whim.

Good thing Canada doesn't have a long, long history of kidnapping children from native parents and torturing/killing them in boarding schools.

...
...

Ad infinitum

our world is rather fucked up.

Countries are bad.

SolRo - 2021-06-13

Countries are constructs. Humans are the real assholes.

Bisekrankas - 2021-06-12

Regardless of what the truth is, the experiments conducted at these laboratories where they create new virus strains that can infect humans (gain of function) is super scary to me.

As I understand it one way of doing it is to use crispr to breed mice with humanlike lungs and infect them to speed up the spillover effect in order to predict new outbreaks.

Also curious about the lab workers that fell ill before the outbreak, I would assume that if you work at a lab with the highest biosecurity rating where this kind of science is perfoemed, why would you visit a public hospital if you fell ill?

As someone put it -- if this would turn out to be a lab leak it would probably do to virology what Chernobyl did to nuclear science

roscar - 2021-06-12

At least nuclear science provides us with a source of electricity among other things. I've never read a good explanation of the upsides of gain of function research. Hell, we're in the middle of a corona virus pandemic; what help has all that corona virus gain of function research in Wuhan done for us?

Lef - 2021-06-13

No benefit to us, but benefit to those who own the world.

It sure made some pharma execs and investors incredibly rich.

Crackersmack - 2021-06-14

I think the problem with the lab theory is the emails revealed that Fauci and other high profile officials considered it a legitimate possibility (or even likely) while at the same time publicly pretending that it was an insane conspiracy theory. In context with some other questionable decisions made by Fauci it doesn't exactly reinforce the credibility of the authorities here.
