Is this epic?

Points for:
- Unless the weightlifter was the first contestant, this does start in media res.
- A theme of ascension is clearly stated in the beginning.
- "A world of pain" is an epithet though, admittedly, not a classic example.

Points against:
- No list or catalog of the weight-lifter's previous achievements, training history, or the people he's worked with is used.
- No muse or god was invoked; Calliope, Melpomene, or even Thalia would be good candidates.

5 stars for this comment alone.

Also, why did they have a bunch of guys with screen standing buy to guard the fallen lifter from view? Does weightlifting fail this spectacularly so frequently that they actually PLAN for this contingency?

RomancingTrain - 2008-08-15

It was a spectacularly Chinese response.

Whaddya mean no gods were invoked? It's the Olympics, it's sacred to Zeus by default.

zatojones - 2008-08-15

Let's play: Chinese or Asperger's?

Justin Dohrmann - 2008-08-15

Yes, block the scene with screens to protect the dignity of the athlete from eyes of the onlookers and then immediately show the replay in slow-motion from every possible angle several times over for viewers at home.

Merkwuerdigeliebe - 2008-08-15

Five stars for the media's slow-mo replay from every angle.

Camonk - 2008-08-15

HURF BLURF DUH - 2008-08-15

TeenerTot - 2008-08-15

Wow.
Still, Phil Hartmann did him one better.

Dinky Patterson - 2008-08-15

One star for each screener.

glasseye - 2008-08-15

Ow, ow, ow.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2008-08-15

He trained his whole life for that. Haha.

coprolalia - 2008-08-15

At least his rectum didn't prolapse.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2008-08-15

I know the picture you speak of. 'Tis grizzly.

Justin Dohrmann - 2008-08-15

It's also totally fake. Someone's rectum prolapsing under strain makes sense to me, but why would the ass of his pants suddenly rip open as if he had an explosion in his colon?

Syd Midnight - 2008-08-17

It's not unheard of for athletes to rip open the seat of their pants, even if they don't blow out their intestine.

Baby Finster - 2008-08-16

Poor guy. 5 for the channel relentlessly replaying it from every possible angle, despite the anchor's pleas.
