So awesome. He's the Alexis de Tocqueville of the SEC.

I once produced a feature explaining the NFL phenomenon to a British audience. It was narrated by Adam West.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-02-07

That is something I would dearly love to see.

pineapplejuicer - 2010-02-01

the most insane spectacle ive ever witnessed in my life was opening day at a philadelphia eagles game. the nfl has a bigger budget to work with, so r. kelly sang the national anthem while a flag large enough to cover the entire field was unfurled, and then 4 fighter jets buzzed the stadium (still to this day the loudest goddamn thing i've ever heard in my life) causing me to throw worth of awful stadium beer to the ground in shock. and then 4-5 different helicopters and the goodyear blimp perched over the stadium for most of the game.

also, you are being shagged by a rare parrot!

Syd Midnight - 2010-02-02

See now that's just the most American goddamn thing. Fry would have loved it.

Also any "Fry in America" clip needs the "curiosity and delight" tag

memedumpster - 2010-02-01

Before the sound out of sync message popped up, I thought he was swearing and they were muting that part.

Crucifried - 2010-02-01

I like that his view of America is "This is fucked but awesome".

splatterbabble - 2010-02-01

And then he went to a Cubs game, pulled out his own heart, and put it on the pile of Cub Fan hearts as the rest of the world collectively pissed on the pile.

Killer Joe - 2010-03-27

AMERICA, FUCK YEAH.
someone had to do it

Riskbreaker - 2010-02-01

"LIVING ON A PRAAAAAYER!"

Slagathor - 2010-02-01

The soundtrack at the beginning is from Alien.

Desidiosus - 2010-02-01

I knew that sounded familiar. That's strangely appropriate.

cognitivedissonance - 2010-02-01

Stephen's languid pause by the shirtless boys was adorable.

Cleaner82 - 2010-02-01

Ridiculous, overpopulated, expensive, American.

*sniff* God bless us everyone.

Cleaner82 - 2010-02-01

Also, hooplar.

GoneGirl - 2010-02-01

HOLY FUCKING SHIT that opening montage music (after the ominous chords) is the overture to Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, which was a major flop. I think I listened to it on the bus today. God, knowing stupid stuff makes me feel irrationally smart.

twinkieafternoon - 2010-02-01

No, Stephen, they just see an excuse to drink a lot and make fun of a rival college with their frat buddies. Also, pep bands are involved. If anything is impressive, it's how little violence goes on off the field, and how civil everyone stays with rivals in the house.

Coming from Britain, where Man U in the 80s used to PREVENT fans from having access to tickets for games abroad because they knew unruly hooligan ones would show up drunk and destroy Turin or Milan with or without consent anyways and didn't want the blood to be on their hands, he should know better than to christen this as special.

Syd Midnight - 2010-02-02

There's a big difference between Manchester United and the Alabama Tech Fighting Wildcats. He is amazed because this is a minor match between university teams. By all rights he'd expect a few thousand clapping spectators but because pro teams are so far apart, college teams substitute as "the local Home Team".

So don't compare it with Manc U, compare it with a football match between Cambridge and the University of London. The US is so spread out that apparently minor sporting events can have major local importance.

Hooper_X - 2010-02-26

Uh, no, Syd. This was Auburn/Alabama. That's a massive massive in-state rivalry with like, 70-80 years behind it. It's Manchester/Arsenal.

(And I bet Auburn got the living piss kicked out of them)

wtf japan - 2010-02-01

I wonder if Fry would have the same reaction if he knew that 95% of the people in the state of Alabama care more about this college football rivalry than anything else in the world. A great many of them are religious and/or political extremists, yet they care more about this than God, country, state infrastructure, or culture of any other variety. The vast majority of Alabamians do not care to receive intellectual or spiritual fulfillment by any other means. Sport fanaticism is not unique to Alabama, but I doubt it is anywhere more pervasive or inexcusable.

5 for wretchedness.

Syd Midnight - 2010-02-02

As a well traveled English gentleman, Fry knows when refrain from becoming too involved in local culture, and stave his curiosity lest he wind up in a cannibal's stew pot.

Severian - 2010-02-02

In the book (which I recommend), he makes it clear that he understands this phenomenon pretty well.

Vicious - 2010-12-21

Boo-hoo, people like a thing.

Valkor - 2010-02-01

American football fanaticism has nothing on soccer. Since I assume Stephen Fry must know this I believe what he is shocked by is by the fan fare to go along with the football. Does Soccer have all of the pre-game, mid-game, post-game, in-game shows? The constant streaming of bands, cheerleaders, flag guard, dance squad, and streakers?

Cheese - 2010-02-01

Or motherfucking F16s?

APE_GOD - 2010-02-01

No, they just have riots. Counting the ways American sports fanatics are silly is like shooting fish in a barrel, but being from the UK Fry has chosen a pretty slippery slope here.

Syd Midnight - 2010-02-02

He will be shocked to learn how little violence is expected to occur at something like this. It makes national headlines here when a sports match requires soldiers and tear gas to disperse it.

facek - 2010-02-02

Fucking Raiders fans.

oogaBooga - 2010-02-02

Too bad soccer is gay so none of that matters.

FISTFULLofSOUL - 2010-02-05

It's FOOTBALL not soccer, we invented it... you twats.

zatojones - 2010-02-09

we invented our football and now we get fighter jets to fly over the games. all you get are drunken racists who start riots over the color of someone's scarf. enjoy!

FISTFULLofSOUL - 2010-02-10

No you stole that from Rugby....which we also invented, wanker.
