While it is true that slavery wasn't the only reason for the start of the Civil War, this video fails to mention that it was slavery that was always the sticking point between North and South. Those evil taxes the narrator claims was the reason the war started were repealed before the war started.

As for blacks fighting for the South? That's complete bullshit.

Ocyrus - 2010-12-20

Not complete bullshit... blacks fought for the South in several instances, but it was almost always by pure coercion... "fight for us, or die".

IrishWhiskey - 2010-12-20

Its easy to be proud of your history when its rewritable.

memedumpster - 2010-12-20

A hundred and fifty years and half of America can't figure out why killing all the blacks you can't enslave is a bad thing. God, we must literally have the stupidest population on the planet. What country is honestly dumber than us? North Koreans probably aren't this gullible.

CornOnTheCabre - 2010-12-20

that might be because most North Koreans probably don't know black people exist.

Ocyrus - 2010-12-20

These are just wrong.

Ludo Smell Bad - 2010-12-20

and they're currently being run on Georgia public television.

Ocyrus - 2010-12-20

Public Television, as in PBS, or Public Access, as in Wayne's World?

Ludo Smell Bad - 2010-12-20

PBS.

StanleyPain - 2010-12-20

See, you have all these "Politically Incorrect Guide..." books to thank for this shit. A bunch of neo-con fucktards with barely a grade school education have been writing these things for years now and basically all it is is semi-professional looking garbage about how EVERYTHING THAT THOSE LIBERAL EDUCATORS TOLD YOU WUS WRONG. One of them is the Politically Incorrect Guide To The Civil War which is filled with this kind of bullshit; mostly lots of dipshit moral relativism like "PEOPLE WHO WANTED FREE SLAVES ALSO DID THINGS LIKE KILL PEOPLE IN SELF DEFENSE, DID YOU KNOW THAT????" See? That totally means that the North were clearly a combination of Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot!

Wander - 2010-12-20

Not really. Having worked in a bookstore when those books really took off, nobody bought them who didn't already believe everything that was in them. It's designed to buff the people who already believe it, not convince new people to join.

StanleyPain - 2010-12-20

I didn't say it was for converting new people. But rather that it created the illusion for tards that taking these stands was somehow educated and literary, when it isn't.

Dinanukht - 2010-12-20

Interesting piece from this weekend's NY Times countering exactly these types of claims:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/19/opinion/19Ball.html?_r=1&scp =4&sq=slavery&st=Search

Quote:
From Georgia to Texas, each state said the reason it was getting out was that the awful Northern states were threatening to do away with slavery.

South Carolina: “The non-slaveholding states ... have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery” and “have encouraged and assisted thousands of our slaves to leave their homes.”

Mississippi: “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world. ... There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union.”

Georgia: “A brief history of the rise, progress, and policy of anti-slavery and the political organization into whose hands the administration of the Federal Government has been committed will fully justify the pronounced verdict of the people of Georgia.”

Ludo Smell Bad - 2010-12-20

those documents will be useful when encountering one of these apologists.

be sure to check out the SCV website to be greeted with a charming rant from a confederate soldier about the lies people in our time tell about the reason they went to war: www.scv.org

TeenerTot - 2010-12-20

I could totally see this on the Onion.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2010-12-20

it's hard for people to accept that their ancestors were worthless scumbags who were probably better off dead

OhYouMeanNancy - 2010-12-20

Oh snap!

RomancingTrain - 2010-12-20

Just check out the ordinances of secession for each state.
http://www.civil-war.net/pages/ordinances_secession.asp
All of them mention slavery and only South Carolina's mentions taxes once.

This bit from Mississippi's sums it up perfectly.
"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery - the greatest material interest of the world."

memedumpster - 2010-12-20

Kentucky got invaded by America. So hilarious.

Slagathor - 2010-12-20

"blah blah blah men like Jackson, Forrest and Lee blah blah blah"

Did she really just give a shout out to Nathan Bedford Forrest?

Zarathustra00 - 2010-12-20

The intended audience for this ad are probably Ku Klux Klan apologetics already or just proud members.

citrusmirakel - 2010-12-20

Seriously: The South. Go ahead and try to secede again. I'm pretty sure we're all willing to let you do it this time.

Maybe afterwards we'll have to pay tariffs on oranges and peaches, but we won't have you dimwits ruining our national identity on a daily basis, and the politics and economy in Mississippi will be handled like the politics and economy in the Republic of the Congo: Unfortunate, but ultimate not our concern.

cognitivedissonance - 2010-12-20

If at first you don't secede, try, try again.

Zarathustra00 - 2010-12-20

This comment is the icing on a deliciously evil clip.

memedumpster - 2010-12-20

I just saw a Southern Secessionist Sympathizer on Hardball. Somehow, Chris Matthews actually made him sweat, it's pretty fucking great for Hardball.

Mother_Puncher - 2010-12-20

It's like Fox News made a PSA on "the truth" and just water it down to make it sound good. I've had guys around here get furious with me when the subject arises.
"The Civil War was fought for states rights. Not slavery."

"States rights? What were they trying to take away?"

"Uh... their rights to govern themselves. Their rights of freedom."

"To?"

"To do what they want like-"

"Like own slaves?"

"JIFJAPDIPDERPDANGLESHIT THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN MY HERITAGE"

IrishWhiskey - 2010-12-20

The "states rights" argument now is just as much a sham as it was then. Before the civil war, the South was all about using federal power to take away states rights to choose whether slavery should be legal, up until the second they were no longer in the majority. They passed the Fugitive Slave Act, a massive violation of states rights, just ten years before the civil war began. I can't count the number of times I've had this conversation:

"I'm a small government Glenn Beck conservative/libertarian. I believe in small government and states rights!"

"But weren't you saying just saying that you wanted Christianity taught in schools, citizenship checks at police stops, government power to indefinitely detain suspected terrorists, criminalizing abortions, more police officers and prisons, and more regulation of content on TV and the internet? And didn't you support federal action to stop states from choosing to allow gay marriage, decriminalize marijuana, pass immigration reform and set up comprehensive healthcare reform?"

"Well yeah, but the point is that New York, California and Washington DC are making the federal government too liberal, and we need to restore states rights so that Real Americans are back in charge."

Mother_Puncher - 2010-12-20

Yeah I've always found that pretty pathetic that a party is so stupid that they will say they want smaller government but cry and bitch about no regulations on things they are against. I guess "real Americans" only surface when it suits the rights' agenda. Huh. I never thought about it in a historical sense but tea party activists are nothing but racists and regressives because the whole party is made up of people who actually fought in the civil war and still have no sense of history. It makes so much sense now.

Bort - 2010-12-21

Wanna piss off a Texan? Remind them that, when they're remembering the Alamo, one of the Texans' grievances with Mexico was that they had outlawed slavery. It wasn't the main grievance the way it was in the Civil War, but it factored in.
