The people "backstage" should have come out, and he should have continued, "And the people backstage can take their hands off the controls as well, because this is clearly being played in Media Player."
He blew it when he got flustered and walked away while telling additional lies. There's not many ways to recover from a fuck up like that, you need enough nerve to roll with it without even hinting that what just happened was not meant to happen.
A smooth move would have been to keep riffing on the "drive with one hand" thing, becoming more and more casual with the driving, pretending to roll down the window and hang his arm out, turn on the radio, maybe flip off one of the other drivers... then move on to the next demo as if that was just 30 seconds of clowning around, so pointing out the fuckup means you didn't get the joke. That would take some brass ones, though.
