StanleyPain - 2012-01-09 It doesn't take a genius lawyer to figure out that getting a conviction on a guy who murdered the man who sexually molested his son is probably never going to happen. Had he not plead, he probably would have been acquitted, or only found guilty on some lesser offense.

You have to remember when this took place too. It was the era of Bernie Goetz when anyone who decided to "rise up" against the tide of crime was some kind of Red Dawn-esque fucking hero and the Death Wish movies were basically wank fantasy for white people.

That man, with careful planning, shot an unarmed, non-threatening, restrained victim (who had not been convicted of any crime) in the head at point-blank range in full view of a rolling video camera.
And he essentially got away with it, because the victim allegedly did something really, really bad.
Vigilante justice is disgusting, revenge is useless, and getting 5 years probation for first degree murder is a farcical subversion of our justice system.

Riskbreaker - 2012-01-09 I agree with the 5 years probation thing being bullshit, but i'd rather not throw a rushed judgment on the father's reaction, even if i don't suport it. The idea of having a close relative being hurt could make anyone go bonkers easily. It's a tricky situation, but it does suck that pro-vigilantes/gun rights nutcases end up using cases like this one as their flagship.
