The only games that are truly art are Chess, and Go. Note that are no videogames on this short list.

Yep.

EvilHomer - 2012-01-28

What about Battle Chess?

At least Battle Chess had tits.

poorwill - 2012-01-28

Chess? Pfft.

Toenails - 2012-01-28

In the case of many video games over the decades, there have been games that contain characters, clothing, weapons, music, enemies, outfits, a world, and everything else that needed to be thought up, illustrated, and designed, and a story needs to be written, to create said games.

Remind me again how that's not art, but the naked chick covered in mud, barfing up ramen onto a pile of spraypainted outdated phonebooks down at the local art college is?

Or even simpler, how music on it's own, illustration on it's own, writing on it's own, acting on it's own, etc are considered art, but when you put them together for a game, it suddenly is no longer art?

tl;dr, this conversation has been pointlessly had across the internet a billion times over with no resolution. I'm only adding to the problem.

Anything which exists may be interpreted as art.
As an ironic outsider, I choose to interpret none of it as such.

TheSupafly - 2012-01-28

Art is when it has meaning and care from the people making it. Usually in big collaberation projects such as movies or games, its the director and sometimes the writer working with the director who is the artist. Many games, even big budget mainstream titles, have directors who genuinely care and enjoy about what they are making and want it to be fullfilling to themfor that reason. To go beyond just fun I mean. But being a complex and well written game with lots of depth isn't what makes a game good, being fun is essentially all that matters, and that is why its harder to capture that 'art' title.

"But being a complex and well written game with lots of depth isn't what makes a game good, being fun is essentially all that matters, and that is why its harder to capture that 'art' title."
Hwahahaha.

I wrote a thing last year along these lines. It wasn't the greatest thing I every wrote, but here it is anyway:

http://gamesiguess.wordpress.com/2011/06/05/games-art/

The tl;dr of my article is that games are too definitive, without room for interpretation. There are few titles that are open to interpretation outside of opinions of quality and very general taste.

"This can't be art! I'm enjoying it!"

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-01-28

Slowly Walking Past Detailed Scenery: The Game.

Monkey Napoleon - 2012-01-28

Or rather, Slowly Walking Past Detailed Scenery While A Narrator Feeds You Ultra Boring Plot: The Game.

SolRo - 2012-01-28

cant be art without being boring

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-01-29

So it's like Braid, only without the game play.

Hammer Falls - 2012-01-30

So,... Myst 2.0?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-01-29

You almost had it. You just need to remove "The Game" from the end of it.

memedumpster - 2012-01-29

I don't even consider movies art anymore, video games have no chance.

Riskbreaker - 2012-01-29

Gameplay is a thing of the past now, the other day i started Shadows of the Damned and just for booting up the game i got a trophy.

Raggamuffin - 2012-01-29

Super Mario is art. Discuss.

kingofthenothing - 2012-01-29

Skyrim is art. Just look at all the awesome vistas. Of all the things my character owns, the coolest is the butterfly in a jar. I've ran with foxes. I've picked flowers from mountain tops. One time I even healed an Elk. Let that sink in. I healed an Elk. What could be more art than a game that contains art everywhere you go?

Ursa_minor - 2012-01-29

Hahaha, I love you.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-01-29

Games can be and often times are art.
