When will the average american citizen learn american corporations have zero loyalty to America?

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-30

When they learn corporations have this crazy idea of making a profit?

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-01-30

Question for TSR: If I pay no taxes and I take big subsidies from the government to survive, am I a corporation or a welfare recipient? Discuss.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2012-01-30

When will corporate boot-lickers realize that "making a profit" doesn't have to mean "squeeze every possible dollar so the CEO can afford a dozen stretch limos instead of four."

It'd also help if we stopped giving tax breaks for moving jobs overseas, gave tax incentives to building/hiring local labor, etc. but for a starter, we need to lose the capital gains tax breaks; it's obviously not "helping" any kind of investment in our domestic economy.

Senator_Unger - 2012-01-30

Early nominee for "first against the wall" post 2012.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

Nothing wrong with profit as long as decent, hard working Americans aren't turned into a slave class.

Don't forget that.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-31

I've experienced pretty much every professional level and I never see a difference. Every worker is out to extract maximum value. You and I may want to think otherwise, but its just fact.

SolRo - 2012-01-31

so greed exists therefore it should be embraced?

also the low wage workers try to extract maximum value because they don't earn a living wage, that's desperation.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2012-01-31

Yes, there's no difference between a minimum wage worker in a warehouse that isn't allowed to talk to anyone because it's considered a waste of company time, and middle income office workers.

There is no difference whatsoever. Except one of those doesn't constantly have to worry about food, clothing, heating bills, and getting to work in a vehicle that works with the ability to afford fuel or taking public transportation that is often unreliable and inefficient.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-31

Yes Solro, facts should probably be embraced. Fight the war for fiction all your life, but understanding reality is often a critical part of transforming it.

SolRo - 2012-01-31

Well then use your own douchebag reasoning.

Guns exist so go fuck yourself with an AK-47.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-01-31

^^^ This is what the guys with money and power are up against.

SolRo - 2012-02-01

Poor them?

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-30

Back in 2010/2011 I lived in Benton Harbor for a year and a half. The house I lived in near St. Joseph was quiet, clean and filled with friendly folk. Downtown Benton Harbor was BAD. And in all that time I've lived there, I haven't seen a single Benton Harbor cop. It's like a different country with no police or something.

Oddly though, there are a few strips in downtown BH that are AMAZING. The best Microbrews ever at the Livery and an organic cafe and sushi bar with amazing food, among others.. The people are the most humble, down-to-earth well-meaning people you will ever meet.

By no means am I in favor of corporate takeovers and abuse of smaller communities, who the F would be? But Whirlpool has helped more than it has hurt. SW Michigan would be crippling more without Whirlpool, believe me. My friend works for Whirlpool and knows how much opportunity it brings to people in the area, without which it would be infinitely more miserable. Yes, the manufacturing work is outsourced, but there are still a TON of jobs to be had, ie marketing, engineering, products testing and design, I.T. dept... Whirlpool buildings are everywhere.

Things like this can't be summed up in 3-minute news segments.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2012-01-30

You mention the marketing, engineering and I.T. A lot of jobs in those fields need job experience in the field and/or a college degree. Yes, there are jobs out there to be had, but how many people in the area have the expertise to get them?

I can only be thankful a company hasn't raped and pillaged my city.

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-30

Totally agree, it sucks for Benton Harbor'ites, I mean the median income is a little over ,000/yr for chrissakes. That's for people that are WORKING.

But, for a lot of other SW Michigan cities that aren't suffering as terribly, with residents that can afford degrees and have prior experience, it's a blessing.

augias - 2012-01-30

It's not about a corporation coming in and raping a community, it's about a corporation fostering a town, creating jobs and opportunity all just to abandon it. I'm sure there is TONS of opportunity for upper management, marketing, IT, industrial design and PR in Detroit working for a big 5 automotive company too, so why is the motor city in such a bad way I wonder.

A nation's wealth comes from labor, and the new paradigm in corporations is to outsource the wealth and reap the monetary benefits for an elite educated few.

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-30

what's done is done. Yes, the elite are benefiting ultimately, and Whirlpool is no different. Of course it's greedy and evil. But I know people that are happier as a result of Whirlpool. They aren't looking at the "big picture", they just need to feed their goddamn kiddos and pay for gas. Good for them, they don't have to give a shit. Irresponsible mindset? Tell that to their recently fed baby. The baby seriously doesn't care, it just wants some damn peanut butter and bananas. it's F'ing starving for chrissakes.

All I'm saying is that without Whirlpool, things would be even shittier for a LOT of people in the area. I don't discount what Whirlpool is doing to Benton Harbor, of course not. There's good and bad in everything.

Let the elites of the world and CEO's of companies do their evil shit. Ultimately they will create their own worst fear for themselves. Really, what goes around comes around. I don't think the universe will let us down in the long run.

Spit Spingola - 2012-01-30

Whirlpool still has more manufacturing jobs in the US than the other major appliance manufacturers, for what it's worth. They still build a lot of refrigerators in Amana, Iowa. The competition is Samsung and LG from Korea and Bosch and Miele from Europe. GE builds mostly in Canada and Mexico. All the other major brands are pretty much subsidiaries of Whirlpool and come out of the same plants. I'm not going to say they're the greatest company in the world but they're pretty much all that's left as far as American appliances go.

CJH - 2012-01-30

early nominee for douchiest post 2012

CJH - 2012-01-30

not you spit

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-30

I had no intention of spreading douchieness, just wanted to share my perspective.

SolRo - 2012-01-30

the perspective of a douche?

augias - 2012-01-31

You don't get it. Some people are happy because whirlpool employs them. That's great. How many thousands more would be happy and feeding their babies if whirlpool used its US government money and tax exemption from the US to make its factories in the US.

As for the fallacy that without whirlpool, life would be shittier: That's the point. As they continue to outsource, labor finds itself without opportunities. Your "it could be worse" scenario is what's happening to american industry and labor today

augias - 2012-01-31

And don't you believe that "what goes around comes around" b.s. for a second. That's some slave mentality right there that the evil in this world will face justice in the a spiritual or ideal realm. Here's a spoiler: They won't. What elites need isn't punishment, it's fair and just laws.

augias - 2012-01-31

*laws to adhere to.

pastorofmuppets - 2012-01-31

No worries, once all that money from the golf course comes rolling in, everyone will be all set.

I was born & raised in a town with hundreds of industry-contaminated lots, which every few years ends up on a list of 10 worst cities to live/raise kids/own a business/whatever. But Benton Harbor... goddamn.

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-31

oh you're silly I love you

Moustache McGillicuddy - 2012-01-31

oops that was supposed to be a reply. oh computers

chumbucket - 2012-01-31

I've sent at least 6 different letters to my Congressional representative asking specifically how Fed money for stimulus is turning into actual new jobs. When the idea was settled upon it "sounded" like a great idea but right away I imagined corporations saying "great, free money!" and none of it really turning into NEW jobs for Americans but ways to get more profit out of existing jobs or less layoffs. All six letters came back with generic: "we're still assessing"...blah blah blah. :(

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2012-02-01

That's adorable. Like when that little girl Virginia wrote to Santa Clause.
