Stalinization is to blame for the "godlessness" of communist russia, you cant create a cult of personality if those stubborn peasants are worshipping someone else. The east orthodox church was prevalent, and powerful, in russia for centuries after the Great Schism.
As for the Russians killing all those millions of people, yes that happened under Stalin's rule.
But one has to consider that Russian history has been rife with famine and genocide since the time of the Muscovites.

Russians (usually) know how to get things done, it may take a few million deaths, but the typical response is, "Cant argue with results."

One of the things about some religious people that disturbs me greatly is their insistance that everybody wants to rape and murder all of the time, and the only thing keeping that in check is the idea of going to hell for it.

I certainly don't feel like raping and murdering, but if people like this kid are so convinced that is the natural state of humanity, aren't they saying that they themselves are feeling the desire to rape, destroy, steal, murder? And only God holds them back? That's certainly creepy.

Then I start to think of legions of low IQ religious fanatics with this insane bloodlust just under the surface, boiling up, with only imaginary fairy tales to keep that killer instinct in check. Maybe religion isn't so bad after all, if it's the only thing keeping people like this kid from murdering me and raping my family.

If you talk to enough religious folk who think this way, you will start to realize that the reason for this upsurge in "you cannot have morals without religion" thing is because they are deeply uncomfortable with subjective morality and the idea that society can change its norms; that's really what it boils down to. In my experience, the quickest way to get a Christians head to explode is to point out that most religious people pick and choose what they want from their religion and ignore everything else even though the Bible (and Jesus) says specifically you're not supposed to do that and the law is the law regardless of where or when. They then have to go through all sorts of mental hoops to justify why it is that they don't follow all sorts of barbaric, bronze age dictates but think that a generic "don't kill people" is the deepest, most complex moral statement their religion can make, even though it's immediately contradicted by a dozen other things. Obviously this kid is too young to understand the complexities of moral philosophy, but yeah...it really is just a pathological need to deny that subjective morality exists and works.
