Oh yeah. Yeah, you know it's coming. Yeah.

lol america.

Cena_mark - 2012-06-13

Forgive me POETV. I used to mock these people and say they were rich compared to others. Children should not be going hungry in this country.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2012-06-13

We forgive you, Mark! Let's hug it out!

Thirty seconds in. Is there any reason why I should watch this documentary that just declared Las Vegas "the Capital of Capitalism"? The fact that it got Cena_Mark to express repentance sort of frightens me.

Toenails - 2012-06-13

The kids being interviewed at school is what did it for me.

It's heartbreaking because I work with kids whose main source of food comes from free-meals provided by the school. Also, my school will also run out of lunches before running out of kids because, what the fuck Kansas Government???

chairsforcheap - 2012-06-13

that statement threw me the fuck off too... goldmann sachs is in new york (they caused greece too. NO NOT GREASE 2) @tha_shuga_rain

Jet Bin Fever - 2012-06-13

It's a brand new day Cena, and I embrace you as my brother.

Cena_mark - 2012-06-13

Can I still be a quasi libertarian who supports school lunch programs?

American Standard - 2012-06-14

Fact: There used to be a political movement, UK in origin, called Christian Socialism. The fact that schools serve lunches at all originates with CS. Free lunches were basically a bribe to get the skeptical poor to send their children, who were usually subsisting off of a single meal a day, to school for an education. (Christian Socialists are also responsible for compulsory schooling for children, child labor laws restricting the ages and hours kids could work, and kicked off what would ultimate culminate in the closure of workhouses.)

Without free school lunches, some children, and not a few, will starve. Simple as that. I grew up in a politically liberal state, so my local schools always offered free breakfasts, too. And I'm glad they did.

pineapplejuicer - 2012-06-14

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS ARE A SOCIALIST CONSPIRACY

but five for making cena take a good long look in the mirror

SixDigitDebt - 2012-06-13

Worth the time to watch. Holy shit.

Toenails - 2012-06-13

You can tell how poor these people are by all the Xboxes and Refrigerators they carry around.

Nikon - 2012-06-13

And yet some people think we are doing too much for the poor in our country.

Bort - 2012-06-13

I can sort of get that -- but only sort of. I know too many poor people, and bad economy aside, they have the disadvantages of assorted problems on physical, emotional, psychological, and/or cognitive levels. The most common issues appear to be cognitive, where a lot of the poor folks I know haven't internalized the connection between "spend responsibly today" and "have food on the table tomorrow". What I see is a lot more of "things blow up, so get ready to run from the blast", for example when the rent isn't paid and they get evicted. They understand the connection, they just don't see that it's something to go out of your way to prevent.

So it's tempting to say "well if you'd just learn to pay your bills this wouldn't happen to you". The problem is, if these particular folks were capable of getting that, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Just because the problem lies in their heads doesn't mean they're in a position to do anything about it.

I haven't ever figured out what to do with the adults, beyond trying to help them keep such stability as they can handle. I have a little more hope for the kids, where I can at least make sure they have food in their bellies, and try to teach them that, if there's something they want, they need to plan for how to get it. Then hopefully they'll have better life skills later.

Ryo-Cokey - 2012-06-13

So in summary of Bort's comment, America is a bad place to be stupid.

Anaxagoras - 2012-06-14

Bort knows some dumb poor people, therefore poor people in general are dumb.

Yeah, the poor are the dumb ones, Bort. You keep believing that.

Bort - 2012-06-14

There are only two dumb people in play here, Anaxagoras; they are Ryo-Cokey and you.

I have not once called the poor dumb. I have said that, from what I have seen, a big commonality among those I know is not having internalized the need for, say, preparing a budget like you and I take for granted. I am not saying that's the only issue, only that it is a commonality I have seen, and it plays into the perspective that we do too much for the poor already. You know the criticism that, if the American poor are so poor, why do they have expensive tennis shoes, video games, Monster High doll collections, etc? It's both a true and a false criticism: true because money is not always spent wisely, false because the implication is that the poor are taking advantage of an overly generous system.

memedumpster - 2012-06-14

The poor just can't manage money, unlike bankers who can't manage money, and the poor need handouts, unlike bankers who needed fucktonnes of handouts, and the poor can't blah blah blah, unlike the rich who can't Jesus cocaine blowjob.

Got it.

Bort - 2012-06-14

Fine, you guys win. Of the many factors that contribute to the ongoing syndrome of poverty, nowhere in the mix will you find short-sighted spending choices. Even if you did see such a thing, it would surely be an indication that the poor are dumb, rather than having grown up without having learned the importance of preparing a budget or balancing a checkbook. Because lord knows it's as simple as telling people "hey, prepare a budget" and they do it and they immediately see how awesome it is and they immediately fall into the habit of doing it every month.

Caminante Nocturno - 2012-06-14

America is a bad place to be stupid in because stupid people such a powerful voting force.

memedumpster - 2012-06-13

Have fun voting, be sure to eat a big meal afterward.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-06-15

-Poor people aren't really poor
-Everything is Obama's fault
-Bring back child labor
-Asking children how it feels to starve
-Saying there's NO JOBS AT ALL ANYWHERE

Wow. This is just full of shitty people and starving children.

Five star evil right here.
