"Today... Women are sexualized to sell products..."

WAKE UP, SHEEPLE.

The portrayal of women in advertising is a serious problem.

The lack of hot guys in stripey socks suggestively eating popsicles is also an issue, albeit a less pressing one.

This was done by some girls I kind of know and they did it for a school project. They were actually interviewed on national radio because of the video and how popular it was online, but it definitely rings through that they wouldn't have made this if it wasn't for marks.

I nearly guessed as much. I guessed local media though.

Doesn't matter if they would have done it for the grade or not. This stupid still occurs and happens. Although, it does help explain the shape of some of the men in the rebuttal adds.

In English, please.

I've seen a lot of those old ads in magazines at the record store I worked at for years, but the spanking coffee ad was a new one to me.

Other than that one, though, they could have found a lot worse than what they showed.

I'm guessing he doesn't want to be mistaken for a feminist anymore.

This is like watching an objectivist's manifesto on gender.

Some of those modern real ones...yeah, gangrape and abuse (particularly the refrigerator one), seems a weird was to sell perfume and fashion.
RocketBlender - 2013-06-13
I thought the same thing, just bizarre. Still not as bad as that entire block of horrifyingly racist PSP ads (http://www.playfeed.com/blogimages/psp_advert_white.jpg), but still...

Advertising isn't about making you have conscious, positive associations about the product or brand, it's about making you remember it and the best way to o that is to evoke a strong emotional reaction while the product or brand logo is on screen. And the best way to provoke a strong emotional reaction is to break taboos, which is why they used to hide vulvas in advertisements for women's products and penises in advertisements for men's, especially back in the 50s and 60s (although I've seen it done really overtly as recently as a decade ago, I don't really pay much attention anymore) - homosexuality was more taboo back then, so putting images of the genitals o the gender you were marketing to would make them uncomfortable, ad that would theoretically make them more likely to notice your brand or product on the shelf later on.

There's a photo of one of the classic, famous examples in this article but there are a ton of them, and it's not much of a challenge to spot them even today:

As a general rule of thumb, if something in a print ad has been photoshopped to be a bit too large or a bit too small then it is supposed to catch your eye, and that means there's a pretty good chance it also loos like a penis.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-13
These days homosexuality and sex in general are a bit less taboo so there's more racism and sexualized violence in ads because that still tends to make people uncomfortable.
