Two people. Is Larry important enough to look up?

oddeye - 2014-01-10

I think he is some kind of comedian or redneck maybe. I was thinking he was that guy who gets all those prank calls on his PBS show, but that's the cable doctor.

Surprisingly, I'm American and know only a little more about Mr. The Cable Guy than these delightful Brits. I know he's kind of like Tim Allen or The Might Be Redneck guy and says "git 'er done," but that's about it.

For some reason, I see him being a lot more popular in England, kind of like Karl Pilkington's more popular in North America.

Crab Mentality - 2014-01-10

He's a comedian doing a redneck character that's not all that different from the real person underneath. He's pretty popular in middle America, so he's got gold-selling albums and has been cast in several dumb movies.

Also distressingly popular in parts of Canada.

Larry the Cable Guy is more like Andrew Dice Clay.

He started off performing as a character to mock a negative cultural stereotype.

Then the people who saw themselves as this stereotype embraced the character. They sort of thought he was trying to tell them to be proud of who and what they are.

Then Danny Whitney (Larry's real name) began catering to these fans in order to keep the money flowing.

Then a lot of people, including David Cross, called him out for encouraging racism, homophobia, misogyny and general willful ignorance and hate.

Then people started to wonder if a guy with a stage persona like Larry should be voicing computer-animated tow trucks in children's movies and he backed off on the controversial material and went back to being just plain stupid.

Speaking of money flow, ya'll should really try the Larry the cable guy fish batter.

Umm.. if I'm not mistaken, David Cross was a computer-animated bird in Kung Fu Panda, and Patton Oswalt was a computer-animated Rat in Ratatoullie, but yeah I tried to listen to about a minute of Mr. The Cable Guy's stand up, emphasis on "tried."

Describing the instructions on the box as "pictograms".

"The United States is like 50 different countries glued together" is the most apt way to describe it.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-14

Dan looks like a young Dave Gahan.

I love that their cans of beer are so much larger than ours, and I'm sure that made this recipe go extra awesomely.

Also I love that it takes a couple of Brits to point out how stupid our drinking age is.
