She reminds me of a lot of academics when confronted with Normals. This is one of the reasons you don't see a lot of actual experts on the news.
Part of it is that she's expecting a reasonable, respectful, on-topic discussion that lasts until things actually get sorted out. (Notice how they keep talking over her.) Another big part of it is that left-wing academics tend to simply dismiss their political opponents as cranks that aren't worth their time, and are thus completely unprepared to respond to the half of the population that agrees with said cranks.

Academia (and especially the social sciences) was the pre-Internet echo chamber. For many academics, interacting with normals is a lot like what happens when a hardcore Redditor tries the same.

Except the academics are a lot more likely (though far from guaranteed) to actually say something worth hearing.

Finding even the tiniest fault with feminism makes you a terrible person. Agreeing with even a fraction of what an MRA has to say also makes you terrible. The people who generally represent both sides are generally hard to cheer for, to be honest. That's probably more true for MRAs than anything. I don't know... I'll just say that both of these people are terrible and I hate them.

I'm not sure if you just called me a terrible person. The thing is, I don't really think that Feminism teaches that men are pigs, so if I criticize Mother Jones for tweeting that men are pigs, even if they were being ironic or something, that's not finding fault with feminism.

There are plenty of situations where "Both of you suck" is right on the money, certainly with this issue. If you're a man who hates women, you're likely to be an MRA. If you're a woman who hates men, you're probably a feminist. All haters suck. Issuing rape threats on the Internet is bad behavior, but we've all seen feminists who engage in castration imagery, haven't we? I know I have.

Men aren't pigs, but enough men behave badly enough that all women (#YesAllWomen) are affected all the time. Rape culture is not the dominant culture, but it's real, and it runs through everything, especial;ly the internet. If you are publically identified on the internet as a feminist, guys are going to talk about raping you, Indeed, if you a visible woman, sex will be used to degrade you. i read an article where someone was citing sexually degrading comments about a female Supreme Court justice.

I give Feminists* credit for generally being on or near the right side of their issues of choice, but then every couple days someone will make some joke about mass execution of MRAs or Republicans or whatever on Facebook and remind me that just because they're on the right side of the issues doesn't mean they aren't exactly like the reactionary fringe of their chosen opponents. I think the trouble with almost any formal ideology, especially on the Internet, is that the bulk of the most vocal and visible proponents seem to always be the ones who are mostly looking to BELONG to something, and what they belong to is less important than the actual belonging. It's really not much different than new age religion, all sorts of economic doctrines, or serious sports fans.



*the vocal minority, reactionary, Internet Feminists, as opposed to, you know, actual rational people who happen to identify as Feminists - they're mostly fine, at least as long as you're upper middle class, educated, heterosexual and white.

Full disclosure: I personally identified as a feminist for most of high school and college, although I never made a big point of labeling myself publicly or anything.

It's a basic rule of human behavior, especially on the internet, but I'm pretty sure I observed it before the internet ever existed: The most obnoxious members of any group are by definition the most visible.

There are exceptions, people who are visible because they are attractive or talented or wealthy or whatever, but the rule is that the most obnoxious feminists, christians atheists liberals republicans mras foodies gays cat lovers etc are the most visible.

There already are some legitimate concerns - unequal treatment in divorce cases, a general lack of fathers' rights, worrying about retroactive withdrawal of consent, etc. #YesAllMen have to worry and should be worried about these things.
