What? You can't murder civilians with complete impunity anymore? Oh, I mean legal impunity... the nightmares are unavoidable.

TheSupafly - 2014-10-23

MERRYWEATHER

Mother_Puncher - 2014-10-23

War... has changed.

Anagramother - 2014-10-23

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-10-23

Mercenaries are the scum of the earth.

fedex - 2014-10-23

what about Bounty Hunters? They seem like fun-loving, OK kinda guys

Merzbau - 2014-10-23

Erik Prince is facing absolutely no consequences for this and remains rich, at large and free to do pretty much whatever the fuck he pleases. This isn't over.

misterbuns - 2014-10-23

Evil.

PegLegPete - 2014-10-23

The clip seems like had some preceding content edited because it abruptly starts, but no mention was made of the actual incident in question, or even the events that occurred, which is a journalism fail. The incident occurred at Nisour Square, Baghdad and was pretty hideous. It's commonly known as the Nisour Square Massacre. Is that an impartial coloring of the event? If we compare it to the Boston Massacre, it's worse.

jreid - 2014-10-23

The Onion went a little more deadpan than usual with this one.

misterbuns - 2014-10-23

To your question, SolRo:

The absolute minimum number of convictions in place of a broader investigation of the power structure that allowed these abuses to take place.

Yep, you're in the right universe.

EvilHomer - 2014-10-23

Hey guys, remember when Obama decided to finally pull the troops out of Iraq... or some of the troops, at any rate... not because he wanted to, but because the Iraqi government wouldn't grant our forces immunity from war crimes prosecution?

Anyway, I don't see why the AP is reporting this like it matters or will result in any sort of change in policy. Washington likes using PMCs because then the PMCs can do the "dirty" shit we need done, and all the blame for said shit will fall on the private sector, not the federal government. If anything, this story proves that the strategy *works*, and we'll be seeing more of this in the future.

Now I have no idea whether these guys deserved the fucking they're getting; accounts of the incident conflict, and it's easy to second-guess people in a combat zone from the comfort of your couch. From what I gather, it sounds like they made an understandable call, which turned out to be a very bad call, and things quickly snowballed out of anyone's control. The guards acted on their best instict, the Iraqi cops reacted on theirs, and after that it was far too late to stop and talk things out. In other words, it's just a fucked situation all around, no heroes or villains on either side. But The Man needs sacrifices, and they're not going to hang anyone important out to dry, so these four are it.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-23

Hey, remember when the date of the pullout was determined before Obama got into office by the idiot who invaded Iraq in the first place?

EvilHomer - 2014-10-24

Which one? There were so many half promised dates that it's hard to keep track. The only thing I remember for sure is a vague feeling that we'd be there forever, so thank god CNMSNBFox are on point to remind us about ISIS!

I do, however, remember Obama trying to weasel out of Bush's completely disingenuous 2011 date, despite the fact that since 2004 Obama had been built up as some golden anti-war savior who would ride in on a unicorn and stick flowers in everyone's rifle. I also remember that the final straw came when the Iraqi government, that we installed, had the *audacity* to refuse to grant us immunity from war crimes prosecution. Ungrateful little buggers! Not that anything meaningful really comes from a lack of immunity, mind you: we see here about the extent of what sacrifices the CoC will make on the altar of Themis. Four hardworking grunts, who probably don't even deserve to get fucked, take a highly publicized fall for a situation that was but a snapshot of what went on, while Bush, Cheney, Prince, even Barry himself, all the people who orchestrated and profiteered and probably violated their constitutional authority in doing so, not even one single night of extra duty between the lot of them.

Old People - 2014-12-07

Dude, no one on this site gives a fuck. All they need to know is that some white people shot some brown people, which is the world's biggest no-no under any circumstances (other than perhaps the even more heinous crime of Jews winning a firefight against Arabs), so we should all rejoice that said white people are going to prison forever.
Besides, private security contractors are soulless mercenaries.
