Winter storms don't have names. Named winter storms are just a Weather Channel marketing move that had no support from NOAA or the NWS. The Weather Channel is nothing but storm porn and Jim Cantore is their Ron Jeremy. Fuck the Weather Channel.

I remember the days when The Weather Channel was basically a news station with nothing but weather reports, and Jim Cantore was just a talking head.

Then they got bought out by NBC and it all went downhill from there.

Jim's usually first on the scene when hurricanes come our way, so he's all right in my book.

But the named winter storm thing is just dumb. We got hit by a bunch of winter storms last year, getting more ice in a two week span than what we probably see in ten years. Do I remember the name of those particular storms? Nope.

I'm actually old enough to remember the weather channel with no live reports, at least where I was. We didn't have cable but it was still on TV with just the shitty soothing jazz music and radar.

I guess you have to stay with the times.. when I was in college in the early '00s I don't think there was even a weather.com, and trying to figure out how cold it was before you went outside was a matter of life and death (or at least frostbite, for me anyway) in Wisconsin. Like "oh look at the sunny day" and your sweat from the free heat that came with every apartment freezes to your face immediately.. so "Local on the 8s" was kind of a lifesaver, at least to a kid who was from a place where it never dropped below freezing for years at a time and snowed once every 8 years. But now, those 8 minutes are 8 seconds so I say bring on XTREME WEATHER CHANNEL.

THUNDERSNOW would also be an epic band name.

I heard Lord Thundersnow dies in the next season of Game of Thrones.

The times and styles may have changed, but his coat never will.
