I believe today it doesn't. Wrestlers will often finish matches despite excruciating injuries for the sake of the show and their reputations. They no longer have to do it to protect kayfabe. The ref should have thrown up the X to let backstage people know he was hurt. The wrestling company said the doc was already tending to another wrestler's injuries from the prior match.
In hindsight we can all point out what went wrong. I don't know if anybody in the ring truly realized what was going on until it was too late.

I think I mentioned it before but I live right by the Bob White Theatre, which hosts the WCWC (West Coast Wrestling Connection) and I kinda know the owner.
