The comments are pretty ouch.

I don't think the "point" of a protest necessarily has to be to garner media attention. This protest succeeded the moment they managed to get the football team on board; after that it was just a matter of waiting for resignations to come rolling in. There was no advantage in letting the press in there to distort the situation for the benefit of CNN's five remaining viewers.

That said, you have to accept that the media IS going to show up if you stage a hullabaloo of this magnitude. Trying to push them away with talk of safe spaces doesn't help your cause, it just makes you look like the type of oversensitive millennial caricatures normally reserved for a South Park episode.

The UM students had a tent encampment there, and were concerned about personal privacy. It went looney when a couple of admin folks got involved in pushing the guy out, but both of them have already apologized and welcomed the press in. Kind of a non-story.

When I was in school, the president of the Jewish Student Union was charged with defacing the JSU with fake Nazi grafitti on the anniversary of Krystallnacht, to "raise awareness", I guess. There was also a kid who published a conservative newspaper on campus. He was in my American History class, and he turned every session, including the review for the midterm, into an endless ideological debate. The professor, apparently, couldn't resist, and the rest of us would just give each other disgusted looks.
