Gonna be really interesting to watch how this one pans out.

poorwill - 2015-11-11

The comments are pretty ouch.

ashtar. - 2015-11-11

It's the people in this video vs youtube racists. Welcome to political debate in 2015. We are fucked.

Xenocide - 2015-11-11

I don't think the "point" of a protest necessarily has to be to garner media attention. This protest succeeded the moment they managed to get the football team on board; after that it was just a matter of waiting for resignations to come rolling in. There was no advantage in letting the press in there to distort the situation for the benefit of CNN's five remaining viewers.

That said, you have to accept that the media IS going to show up if you stage a hullabaloo of this magnitude. Trying to push them away with talk of safe spaces doesn't help your cause, it just makes you look like the type of oversensitive millennial caricatures normally reserved for a South Park episode.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-11

Too much media attention is actually a big part of why protests aren't particularly effective anymore.

memedumpster - 2015-11-11

I don't know, the Iraq war protests were the largest in American history and they were barely reported on at all. It seems they were ineffective even in those optimum conditions.

SolRo - 2015-11-11

Those protests didn't stop anything except traffic.

These stopped a football team, which is now a university's most treasured and well-funded asset.

If the Iraq protestors got every Starbucks and McDonald's to shut down, maybe Americans would have cared.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-11

Point made, but I'd say that strategic underreporting is part of media attention too.

Part of what made the civil rights movement in particular successful was that the media didn't know how to cntainit. Even the stuff like Rosa Parks that was very deliberately planned for the media impact it would have was taking advantage of that.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-11-25

The red haired bitch is a professor in communications. She doesn't even understand the first amendment. Fuck all of these protesters.

poorwill - 2015-11-11

Anyone else getting Amazon ads for the Gifted Hands DVD? Made me giggle.

BHWW - 2015-11-11

The whole mess has lead to images like this: http://puu.sh/lfSHq/8a0f57c6ae.jpg

chumbucket - 2015-11-11

Getting all up in his face to keep him from getting all up in their faces.

TeenerTot - 2015-11-11

The UM students had a tent encampment there, and were concerned about personal privacy. It went looney when a couple of admin folks got involved in pushing the guy out, but both of them have already apologized and welcomed the press in. Kind of a non-story.

Void 71 - 2015-11-11

Dat video/submitter synergy.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-11

So conservatives LIKE the media now? How long have I been asleep?

The real evil begins when they graduate from their Protected Campus womb of invulnerability & enter the real world. Employers beware.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-11

No, a job in the real world is exactly what's needed.

SolRo - 2015-11-11

Some fortune 500 companies are getting rid of annual performance reviews to better retain millennial workers.

They're actually now expecting middle management to work more throughout the year in place of annual reviews.

So gen-x buried the unions with their reagonomics horseshit while millennials are just making corporations cave to their whims.

ashtar. - 2015-11-11

Incompetence is like being on strike all the time!

SolRo - 2015-11-12

I'm sure that's what it is.

They're so incompetent that major corporations are changing decades-old habits instead of just firing them.

And god forbid managers have to work and supervise people on a semi-regular basis.

namtar - 2015-11-12

Annual performance reviews are shit because a good deal of managers ONLY talk to their direct reports about performance during the once a year review, and then those same managers have the nerve to complain about their workers or how hard it is for HR to sign off on termination.

Old_Zircon - 2015-11-12

The larger social forces that allow any of these things to exist are the biggest shit of all.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-11-11

Politically aware college students are the worst. When I was in school, the president of the Jewish Student Union was charged with defacing the JSU with fake Nazi grafitti on the anniversary of Krystallnacht, to "raise awareness", I guess. There was also a kid who published a conservative newspaper on campus. He was in my American History class, and he turned every session, including the review for the midterm, into an endless ideological debate. The professor, apparently, couldn't resist, and the rest of us would just give each other disgusted looks.
