You should never let Tree Trunks drive.

me too

Binro the Heretic - 2016-12-13

I swear to God, I heard the GPS say, "Make a right here." just before she turned left. Or is that just my own old failing ears?

This is also a good time to bring up the fact many states wanted to pass legislation forcing people over the age of 70 to get annual drivers' tests. This was in response to a rash of octogenarian drivers doing shit like driving through cafes and crowds when they mistook the gas pedal for the brake.

But AARP filed lawsuits claiming age discrimination. The states would have to either test ALL drivers every year or let the fossils continue to renew their license by mail.

You can guess what happened.

jfcaron_ca - 2016-12-13

I would LOVE annual testing for drivers. It's completely nuts that there is effectively no renewal process until you're super old. I mean, the laws change but there is zero opportunity for the average driver to find out about the changes. With annual (or every 5 years or whatever), you could actually tell all the drivers: PUT THE FUCKING PHONE DOWN YOU TWAT.

StanleyPain - 2016-12-13

My grandma managed to hang on a legit drivers license until she was in her early 90s. She basically never drove and was incapable of driving properly, but it was horrifying to see how easy it was for her to keep renewing. So long as you pass a very basic eye exam, that's basically all they ask for here. After a certain age you have to renew every year (as opposed to 4 or whatever), but damn...she had a valid DL when she passed away at 98.

yogarfield - 2016-12-13

Even worse, there's no right there. See my other comment.

blue vein steel - 2016-12-13

My 93 year old grandfather still drives, but basically only to the Hardee's a 1/3 of a mile away in the mornings for coffee, and to church.

I'm all for mandatory driving tests for license renewal ever 2 years.

Simillion - 2016-12-13

surprised they weren't hurt, looks like they went off the edge of a good 8 foot drop

Born in the RSR - 2016-12-13

I need to get my eyes checked, cos I didn't see the ramp at all either for the first two viewings.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-13

I missed it the first time as well, the lack of any signage or even road markings is incredibly dangerous. Imagine driving around this complex at night with no street lights. You'd never see the dock.

I've seen old people do some monumentally foolish things, but I'll give these two a pass. Asking about the candle store after the crash though, that's pure old lady! Could well have been my mother-in-law. Star's are in salute!

blue vein steel - 2016-12-13

really, this is hardly their fault. The property owners may actually be liable for damages to their car as well. Looks like a OSHA violation too.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2016-12-13

this^^^ no barrier, no warning stripes, no bollards

Bobonne - 2016-12-13

I honestly thought it was a sinkhole or something at first. That lack of any warning whatsoever is (or should be) downright criminal.

jfcaron_ca - 2016-12-14

This looks like private property on a light industrial lot. I bet they drove past plenty of warning signs when getting off the public street that should have been enough for any competent driver to know they shouldn't be there. This driver should not be driving, and extra signs would not have helped.

Simillion - 2016-12-14

jfcaron_ca, case closed! *wristflap*

Alternate title:

'Aged crones quest forth to the domain of the chandler'

yogarfield - 2016-12-13

Holy Hell, It's story time.

So when I was a kid I spent countless nights in this industrial park. Lots of BMX and skate kids would set up ramps out there and for some reason we'd never get kicked out. There are several angled loading docks that just drop off into the ground, and they flood when it rains. We used to session that grass gap you see to the right before they turn, and usually you were going to fast that you had to drop into the loading dock that they drove over. It's about a 5 foot drop, so easy enough on a bike, but they had to have seriously fucked up their car.

It's a little disconcerting that they are allowed to drive. There is a strip mall nearby, but it's a Byzantine path to get where they were. They weren't even on a road anymore.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-12-14

OK smartypants, tell us. WHERE IS THE CANDLE SUPPLY STORE?

yogarfield - 2016-12-20

It wasn't there when I lived in the area, but a quick GPS says that they were actually pretty dern close. Pretty sure if they took a left out of the end of the alley they would have reached their destination.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-12-14

Maybe I'm getting old too, because I had to watch the video four times before I could tell exactly what happened. It's honestly not hard to completely miss that you aren't going down a normal piece of road when it's flooded like that.

I actually don't blame the lady driving at all. The fact that there isn't so much as a sign posted is dangerous as hell. Someone could just as easily be driving through there in the dark at night and do the same without any water to dampen the blow.
