I just threw up a little.

Bisekrankas - 2018-04-30

Ohhhh so facebook was just this cool chill buddy all along who just made a little oppsie whoopsie gazillion dollar deal selling data and exploiting their platform to sway opinions and deliver skewed information. Just a cute little fucksie fuck by your best friend on the internet.

Social media is the contemporary tool for contolling large amounts of people: Religion -> Ideology -> Social media

betamaxed - 2018-04-30

I'm so glad I deleted my account. Fuck you zuckerberg, you lizard piece of shit.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2018-04-30

I saw this on Comedy Central yesterday. I couldn't decide if it was a joke or not.

Gmork - 2018-05-01

Deleted mine.

It was a long time coming. It's kind of like - if anyone wants to be in my life, they're going to have to do it for real without the safe and lazy out of being "connected to me still" because we both have facebook.

Those who disappear were already gone, it's just becoming official. Most of my family sucks anyways.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-02

I will gladly accept an email. I will.accept bulk emails, as long as they're not about Hillary Clinton. When did emailing become quaint and old.fashioned?

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-02

Some of the undergrads nowadays don't like sending emails to their TA or professor because they think it's "too formal".

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-01

They couldn't even make their own users look like anything other than insufferable shitheads.

jfcaron_ca - 2018-05-01

I never made a Facebook account, not necessarily out of some high-minded principle, but because I know I'd become addicted and lose myself in there. I've had people I know seriously try to convince me to make an account "just to stay in touch" or whatever, so now I'm glad people are taking nonFacebookism seriously.

>>> not bein on facebook, the new ''i don't have a tv'''''''

It's way past that.

You pay a price in relationships for staying off facebook I missed my high school reunion because no one bothers to look for you anymore if you're not on Facebook.

Nothing on the internet is as obnoxious and aggressive as Facebook, and that includes Google. Google doesn't force me to use my real name in a public forum, and google doesn't constantly prompt me to express my preferences for every fucking thing for the benefit of advertisers. I know that google tracks my searches, but facebook tracks MY RELATIONSHIPS, and makes them publically searchable. ( Sometimes this works out, like when some idiot sent a woman a dick pic, and the woman forwarded the dick pic to his mom.)

For years, I have repeated the cycle of giving in, opening a facebook account, and then deleting it when some new bit of information surfaced which creeped me out. Once I uploaded a photo of a t-shirt I had purchased with a picture of Richard Stallman, and facebook asked me "WHO IS THIS?", and I deleted my account. Of course, since then I've gotten used to Google asking me the same question, but they're not publishing my real name. That's a vast difference. Google may even know my real name, but they're not publishing it. And I don't identify my photos for Google, either.

Later I read something written by Richard Stallman (The founder of GNU and the author of the GPL, for those who don't know) and Stallman requested that his photo not be uploaded to any site that uses Face Recognition Technology.

The Trump presidency is the end of me having anything to do with Facebook. Nixon had an enemy's list that was 68 pages long. If Trump has an enemies list (and that would be completely in character it could be terabytes. Cambridge Analytica demonstrated that anyone who has an evil plan and they want to know everything about everybody isn't going to go to google or twitter. They're going to go to Facebook.

And now that I'm not on Facebook, I'm getting ads and spam for Facebook every fucking day

Boycotting Facebook won't destroy facebook's market, but it may open up a market for something less evil.

The advantage of facebook is that it uses real names, so that people can find each other. Everything else about Facebook is just repackaged email, web forums, and blogs. What if there was a searchable database of E mail addresses listed under real names? You could have a public email account that anyone can locate, but no one is going to get past that one account unless you give them more information You'd pick your own email server, so any data collection would be decentralized. You post blogs for subscribers and bulk emails All the same stuff, with a lot more control.

Gmork - 2018-05-01

It's not about Facebook being evil, it's about Facebook making it too easy to have a global map of targets for anyone who wants to target someone.

Ads. Revenge. Stalking. Impersonation. Otherwise fucking with peoples lives.

That's the aspect people are concerned with. Not "appearing cool" like someone who proudly says they don't watch cable.

I proudly don't watch cable because 99% of it is fucking stupid and commercials make me want to break the nearest object handy. I've often dreamt of a product for your television that could "listen" for audio of known commercials and automatically display a visualizer, music, video, or other media of your choice for the downtime until your show starts back up.

Might be something you can do to give it a pre-loaded list of current commercials - maybe that could be something I'd have to get a team to manage and catalogue - or maybe it could be something a user can "mark" as a commercial so it can scan and predict them.

Or - it listens for the START of commercials, which you may or may not have to earmark yourself, and you have a muted PIP-box of the actual commercial (the idea of which is still heinous to me) which you can instantly resume to once you see that your show comes back on. Sloppier but maybe easier to develop.

Anyways. Yeah. Commercials are also relevant because Facebook is just a giant advertiser themselves. I'm somehow on topic still, fuck you.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-02

Yeah, and you unlike not having a TV, you really feel an obligation to explain to people why you're not on Facebook. When I'm explaining that I'm not on Facebook, I'm trying to explain to people why they haven't heard from me or asking them to take extra steps to contact me, and it doesn't feel cool. It feels embarrassing, frankly, and sometimes people can be pissy about it, adopting a.whole.different kind of superior attitude about how THEY'RE the ones who care about people, yadda yadda.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-02

Hulu will give you commercial-free streaming for an extra 4 bucks a month. I think that's a fair deal.

Gmork - 2018-05-02

When I still had hulu, they had commercials even if you had a paid account. They can forever miss out on my business now.

Also, they had the worst selection of shows ive ever seen in my fucking life. Maybe something changed since then, but when I had hulu it was a bunch of shit I wouldn't subject my worst enemy to.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-03

Okay, I'm not going to argue. your opinion is as valid as mine, but if you ever get on Hulu on a computer go to " television" and then to"popular" "You'll see a list of every television show from most to least popular. You can scroll down forever and never get to the bottom. I dont think Ive ever made it all the way. it's an amazing variety I'm sure you'll find stuff that you hate. The most popular show is usually " family guy". But if you keep going, you'll find TV from every decade and every continent.

The algorithm won't show you this stuff. You have to look.

Please excuse the bad tablet typing.

Gmork - 2018-05-03

Sounds like they actually added more shows since last time I had it (which was years ago) because it honestly looked like fucking Nick at Night for a while.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-02

Richard Clarke actually came out and said that "psychological warfare, writ large", carried out on Facebook by Russian Troll farms is what put Pere Ubu in the White House. Is it true? We'll never really know, but it's possible. Isn't that enough? There's no coming back from this. Facebook isn't evil, but it can't be trusted. They methodically amassed a huge amount of power, and didn't foresee the consequences.

Either Cambridge Analytica couldn't have prevented, or it could have been prevented, and Zuckerberg just didn't give a shit. Which is more comforting?
