Characteristically hilarious. But there is no such thing as the "Wuhan Novel Coronavirus Lab". The theory is that there was a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Beyond that, labs are designated only by their biosafety level, not by the type of virus they study.

Didn't take Stewart long to descend into crankdom, did it?

Sputum - 2023-02-28

Purdue University has a renowned criminal psychology program and, lo, there's crime in Indiana! That's just too convenient to be a Coincidence.

Wuhan, China is slightly larger than NYC. Any city that big will have bioresearch facilities, and some of those labs are undoubtedly dedicated to studying coronaviruses. Remember, coronavirus is a grouping of viruses that have been around forever, not just SARS-CoV-2. Something like 15% of common colds are coronavirus.

Lef - 2023-03-01

Official level 4 biolabs are rare. They are the most "secure" and deal with the most dangerous pathogens.

The Wuhan lab was a level 4 lab.

In the last week, the Department of Energy, WSJ and FBI have all said it was a lab leak.

Wait until you figure out who funded it! You'll keep your head in the sand for another 3 years!

Weird that this is in the news again and getting support right after tensions with China ramp up.

I have yet to see and evidence other than "there was a lab". Given the effects of covid on China, you'd have to be pretty unhinged to think they did it deliberately, but a lot of people have a cartoonish understanding of the world.

Also, like everything, actual reputable information is available at the click of a button.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_lab_leak_theory

But let's ignore that and focus on our opinions.

Lef - 2023-03-01

yes, very easy...

FBI says lab leak
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64806903

Dept of Energy
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/2/27/us-energy-dept-says-c ovid-probably-came-from-a-lab-leak

WSJ

You ask the right question, why now?

Sputum - 2023-03-01

Nothing in any of these links is evidence for the lab leak theory, just conclusions from various agencies.

The only thing that looks like empirical evidence cited in any of this is AGAINST the lab leak theory

In July 2022, two articles appeared in the journal Science analyzing all available epidemiological and genetic evidence from the earliest known cases in Wuhan.[39][38] Based on two different analyses, the authors of both papers concluded that the outbreak began at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market and was unconnected to any laboratory.[40] A third manuscript (a pre-print)[158] examined RNA samples taken directly from the market in the spring of 2020 and detected SARS-CoV-2 RNA in environmental samples collected from animal stalls and sewage wells at the market.[159][11] The RNA detected was highly similar to viruses which infected early outbreak patients who became sick after being present at the market.[160][161] No virus was detected in any samples taken directly from animals at the market. University of Sydney virologist and co-author of both publications Edward C. Holmes commented that "The siren has definitely sounded on the lab leak theory" and "There's no emails. There's no evidence in any of the science. There's absolutely nothing".[40]

I'm willing to have my mind changed on this, but the FBI and DoE aren't being very persuasive. Plus they have incentives to drum up anti-chinese sentiment.

ashtar. - 2023-03-02

Yeah, it's possible. But there's no evidence it came from a lab. The FBI and DOE reports are not publicly available, are "low confidence", and other government agencies believe it to be of zoonotic origin. If they have some evidence other that "there was a lab," they should release it. Sputum quoted the papers which, as far as I know, are the only evidence-based attempt at tracing the origin based on DNA.

TeenerTot - 2023-03-02

Who cares???
Can't we all just agree that the world needs better oversight of pathogen labs AND less environmental fuckery?

But no, y'all go ahead and argue about it while the next pandemic births itself.

Enjoy - 2023-03-02

That's what I don't understand. It looks likely Fauchi funded the Wuhan lab and the virus was leaked. Unclear whether intentionally or not.

So what now? That's the real question. Do we allow gain-of-function experiments in leaky labs or highly regulate/ban such a thing.

ashtar. - 2023-03-02

Defund virology labs! That's the only way to avoid another pandemic!

Just pure fall of civilization plague of madness shit. Real Moscow plague riot of 1771 vibes.
