yeah but what if a transsexual has their feelings hurt

mon666ster - 2023-04-04

Does it make you feel like a big man to use incorrect terms?

casualcollapse - 2023-04-05

They will kill your school children DUUUH

Spike Jonez - 2023-04-05

Kill yourself

garcet71283 - 2023-04-05

Yeah but what if a (poeTV approved race/gender specification of the week) has their feelings hurt?

Accidie - 2023-04-05

ya'll are pro censorship whenever it makes you feel like a big whatever gender you choose.

teethsalad - 2023-04-08

"i'm for the marginalized and downtrodden people of the world unless i have to admit i've been wrong on the internet before or it doesn't cater exclusively to my narrow, self-serving vision of what revolution would entail"

-boatman von clowndick, esq

Crackersmack - 2023-04-08

I support poor and working class people, not "the marginalized" which apparently is an extremely broad category that includes bronies, sexual fetishists, and people obsessed with niche internet gender nonsense.

Cena_mark - 2023-04-04

I guess it makes sense for children's editions, but even then just explain to the kids about how times had changed.

Pillager - 2023-04-04

Personally, I'd want children to grow up knowing that people thought A Lot differently 100 years ago.

mon666ster - 2023-04-04

You can tell kids that things used to be different without forcing BIPOC children to read course material with racial slurs.

Pillager - 2023-04-04

They listen to rap...

Spike Jonez - 2023-04-05

Pillager pillages his mom's pussy

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-05

"You can tell kids that things used to be different without forcing BIPOC children to read course material with racial slurs."

Or the word "fat," I guess.

Pillager - 2023-04-05

Spike preps bulls.

SolRo - 2023-04-06

Got any other racial stereotypes about BIPOC kids you’d like to use Pillager?

Pillager - 2023-04-06

I don't want to see Mark Twain, Richard Wright, or Any One Else censored.

Crackersmack - 2023-04-08

just to be clear, BIPOC stands for "bisexual people of color"

SolRo - 2023-04-10

“BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Pronounced “bye-pock,” this is a term specific to the United States, intended to center the experiences of Black and Indigenous groups and demonstrate solidarity between communities of color.”

There is nothing you can be right about

cognitivedissonance - 2023-04-04

If this is the thing that offends you, you deserve to be offended, and harshly.

garcet71283 - 2023-04-05

Because the best way to learn from the past is to cover up it ever happening!

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-05

Permanently altering the text of old books is immoral and there is no justification for it—especially if the author is dead and has no say in it. Disclaimers are fine. A 20 page foreward about how and why the text is offensive now is fine, whatever. But this is some Ministry of Truth kind of shit, for real, and it makes me very angry.

Accidie - 2023-04-05

it's a shameful lot on here who have had their brains melted to the point of reacting badly to people questioning the censorship of old books.

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-05

Yes, thank you. This absolutely should not be happening. But it KEEPS happening. A new author rewritten every week. Who's next, I wonder?

casualcollapse - 2023-04-05

The Bible

jfcaron_ca - 2023-04-06

How about if copyright terms weren't a bajillion years then any publisher would be able to print an original or modified version without consequence and then maybe the book buyer could make the choice?

This is only a problem because companies Own Culture via copyright.

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-07

I hope Disney losing Steamboat Willie to public domain starts the ball rolling.

casualcollapse - 2023-04-06

FUCK THAT, THAT IS SO GODDAMN DISRESPECTFUL

it does piss me off

SolRo - 2023-04-07

Most of the people you’re all crying about wrote books to make money. Most of the works needing light editing to remove casual racism are targeted at younger audiences and have little value aside from entertainment…they aren’t political treatise, religious text or philosophical ponderings that need protecting.

How about instead of being delicate white people clutching your pearls about the writing of dead white people you accept that works can change with the times.

Because when kids are exposed to these works it’s not in a context of studying the bad views of the past.

How about editing the content and add a disclaimer that the book was edited for unacceptable bigotry that was a product of its time and can be studied by finding the original works.

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-07

"studied by finding the original works..." They want the original works destroyed. They want them to fade out and disappear so these "corrected" versions can exist in their place.

Agatha Christie and Ian Fleming weren't targeted at younger audience. One assumes that audience is made up of adults who are supposed to be able to think for themselves.

As far as the YA books, the what racism? What casual bigotry? The "sensitivity readers" these companies hired recommended getting rid of words like "fat," and they "fixed" it so Matilda is checking out Jane Austen from the library instead of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Because this dead author's character needed her reading habits "corrected?" The current and future generations are going to "think" and "decide what's best" for her now?

The "unacceptable bigotry" in your hypothetical disclaimer would be entirely, subjectively up to the person contracted to mark up these books. It could run the gauntlet from an outdated slur to the description of a tree being too phallic.

But you do touch on one good point, though. Words matter, don't they! Authors often choose those words very carefully: for alliteration, satire, allusion, rhythm, metaphor, callback to an earlier part of the text, etc.

But good God, he used the word 'amorous' here. That is completely unacceptable here in 202X because of buzzword, buzzword, buzzword, buzzword, and buzzword culture buzzwordism.

This isn't white people clutching their pearls. This is something nobody asked for, that is going to have ramifications down the road that are far worse.

https://rethinkingschools.org/articles/rethinking-agatha-christie/

‘A review of the 2004 book version of Ten Little Indians, now published by St. Martin’s Griffin as And Then There Were None, reveals that editorial revision is still needed. Page 57 includes the statement “natives don’t mind dying.” Anti-Semitism is also expressed on pages 5, 6, and 124, when a Mr. Morris is referred to as “little Jew” and “Jewboy” with “thick Semitic lips.”’

Rafiki - 2023-04-07

"How about editing the content and add a disclaimer that the book was edited for unacceptable bigotry"

These are great books for children, if you edit out all of the unacceptable bigotry.

"delicate white people clutching at pearls about the writing of dead white people"

I see the insistence on editing books as white people wanting to have their cake and eat it too. Rather than give kids completely different books of at least equal entertainment and literary value (without checking, I know there are plenty), people are just rewriting books that are being called offensive because they refuse to let them go. We could actually set a good example for children and say, "these books have no place in an enlightened society," and stop reading them, stop promoting them as good culture, stop distributing them, etc., but instead we go with, "I support equality and inclusion, but not at the expense of sacrificing things I like. Can we just paper over the parts people are complaining about and maintain the cultural status quo?"

"they aren’t political treatise, religious text or philosophical ponderings that need protecting."

I guess the history of culture doesn't need protecting. Or the history of any individual. If you've spent your entire life contributing absolutely nothing, I suppose it can be hard to care if someone comes in after the fact and redefines your existence, but I find it pretty fucking offensive that we're doing that to people. I don't care if people stop reading these books, or discourage others from doing so, or write all kinds of critiques, or lobby publishing companies to stop publishing them. But rewriting someone else's thoughts to make them more suitable to your own? Fuck off.

"Most of the people you’re all crying about wrote books to make money. "

Fuck off again with this. Everybody needs to make a living, as if earning a paycheck off of doing something you like invalidates any artistic integrity. I'll also point out that these books are being edited solely so the corporations publishing them can make continued profit, not because they give two shits about social issues (see: the complete history of business).

SolRo - 2023-04-07

Most of these writers would give zero fucks about editing out some racist terms while preserving the narrative.

And the ones who would consider it vital to degrade minorities as part of a story aren’t worth defending. And I’m specifically talking about casual racists, before you shit yourself about books that cover racism as a bad thing.

Nominal - 2023-04-10

"It's the greedy authors who wrote these books to eat, not the saintly publishing companies, who are the REAL insincere money grubbers here!"

is the best SolRo lack of self awareness moment since claiming that it was the west who was blinded by crying "Nazis!" when it comes to Russia.

Quad9Damage - 2023-04-07

"Most of these writers would give zero fucks about editing out some racist terms while preserving the narrative."

Did you ask them?

Accidie - 2023-04-07

SolRo is still hoping MSNBC will hire him if he makes enough dumb statements.

SolRo - 2023-04-08

I’ll phrase it differently; if they are so adamant about preserving racism then I don’t give a fuck what they want. Same as i don’t give a fuck about burning every inch of tape and wiping every byte of data that has tucker Carlson on it.

ashtar. - 2023-04-07

The professional managerial class frequently conflates language with reality. The racial wealth gap has increased in the last few decades, despite the incredible progress we've made in policing words.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2023-04-08

The past is a foreign country.

Editing old books is like going to Italy and eating at a McDonalds

SolRo - 2023-04-08

But the euro McDonald’s are higher quality than the American ones. Not even mentioning the Japanese ones.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2023-04-08

Utterly incomprehensible, mat god have mercy on your soul.

SolRo - 2023-04-08

I’m going to Italy in 3 weeks and I’ll eat at McDonald’s just to pop your monocle
