I think the desire for the Jews to have a state based on the history of European anti-semitism and genocide is pretty reasonable. But they were also operating out of the traditions of European colonialism, and that made them not think hard enough about the fact that there were already people living here.

Israel aspires to both a liberal democracy and a specifically Jewish state. These two things have been in conflict since Jews are a minority on the land occupied by Israel. A two state solution has been made impossible by settlement of the West Bank. So, it's either ethnic cleansing Palestinians (preferably slowly and in a way that attracts minimal attention, but it sure looks like they're speeding it up lately) so they can have a Jewish Ethno-state, or a secular democracy with equal human rights for everyone. The first seems more likely, but I'm hoping for the latter.

Well said Ashtar. I think that's the only hope that makes sense. While SolRo jerks off fantasizing about murdering Jewish families, the only real path forward is reconciliation. There are precedents. England and Ireland are at peace -- there's simmering hatred among a very few on both sides but the peace has held and the youth want to move on. The former Yugoslavia is more like a frozen conflict but at least they've more-or-less kept a lid on it for twenty years.

One can only hope that in a hundred years the grandkids of the people now fighting will look back on this conflict with as much disinterest and distaste as we look back on Europe's 17th Century Wars of Religion. Hope, and do what little we can to help.
