Caminante Nocturno - 2008-09-10
There's not really much you can add to that.
Except laughter.

joffe b - 2008-09-10
I tried to show this movie to some friends a few months ago and they all told me that it was horribly racist and sexist and how dare I laugh at that. They're pretty horrible people.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-09-10 It is a racist movie. It stereotypes Klan members as bigots, and Germans as fun-loving promiscuous good guys.
|
Syd Midnight - 2008-09-11 Wow.. I was reading an old TIME magazine, and back when it came out the most controversial aspect was the farting cowboys scene.

Old_Zircon - 2010-08-11 I met a guy who saw this in prison in the 1980s. He was the only white man in the orison theater. Everyone loved it.

TeflonDoc - 2008-09-10
I showed this movie to a certain girl, the only thing she laughed at was was when Hedley slapped Lili. It took her five minutes to get her breath back. Some people...

YOU HONESTLY EXPECT US TO MINUS VOTE FOR "WHERE DA WHITE WIMMIN AT" DUPES?! Hell, I like the stories already!
Blazing Saddles is one of those movies that a white guy brings over for movie night so he can utterly ignore everyone else on the couch, and claim THEY'RE the racists for applying contemporary racial awareness with that of around the time the movie was produced, if some dumb bitch brings it up instead of laughing along.
I assure you, this is a winning plan.
|
joffe b - 2008-09-10 thats it, you're never coming to my movie night ever again!

HankFinch - 2008-09-10 I reread that so many times, and I have no idea what it was that you were trying to say. But I hear ya, brother!

Glenn or Glennda - 2009-12-11 I shouldn't have to say this but:
Okay bitches, here it is: Blazing Saddles is a penetrating satire that exposed the inherent racism behind the myth of the American West, and by extension, America. With fart jokes.
The film is solidly anti-racist, and only employs stereotypes to explode them. In terms of racial awareness, it's years ahead of its time EXCEPT that it's become taboo to actually *say* "the N word". In my opinion, this cultural shift makes the film more powerful and relevant today, not less powerful and relevant.
But it may not be the best film for a white guy to take to movie night with his black friends, or vice versa... unless you want to risk pissing people off. Or have a serious discussion about what race is really about in America. That may not be what movie night is about for you and your friends... but it has everything to do with why "Blazing Saddles" remains a motherfucking masterpiece.
I don't know what happened to Mel Brooks. What led him from this to "Spaceballs" and "Dracula: Dead and Loving it". Maybe once you've exploded the myth of America, there's nothing left to do but spoof popular culture.
Regardless, because of this one film, if Mel Brooks were to tell me to get down on my knees and kiss his thousand year old ass, I would reply "How low?"
|
Old_Zircon - 2010-08-11 Anyone, white or black, who could possibly misunderstand this movie is too stupid to have friends.

Randroid - 2008-09-10
I don't see how you couldn't "get" this. In fact, in a better world, you should be sent to some kind of reeducation camp if you didn't.

now that is some authentic frontier gibberish

Excuse me while I whip this out...

It's no "Shoot low, they're riding shetlands!" but I suppose it'll do.

So where are they at?

|
IrishWhiskey - 2008-09-10
"...I'm John McCain, and I approve this message"
|
Rovin - 2008-09-10 That would have been white HARLOTS, not women.
|
chumbucket - 2008-09-10
although great as a short and sweet, the added scenes of the white hoods looking over and subsequent hurried sashay to the rocks add some delightful humor as well...5 anyway

Growing up, my father would use this line basically all the time.
Like, walking into a restaurant.

Not nearly enough stars to give this.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-09-10
It is a downright embarrassment that Citizen Kane outranks Blazing Saddles on all those "Best Movies Ever" lists. There is literally no single frame of this film lacking superhuman perfection. If Michaelangelo, Buddha and Yo Yo Ma were to make a film, it would be Blazing Saddles.

Lies, lies, LIES! - 2008-09-13
I think we also need the "Up yours, nigger" scene.

Did You Know: Richard Pryor was nearly cast in Cleavon Little's role. S'true.
|
Prickly Pete - 2009-02-03 We actually watched this in history class last month, heh. And evidently, a real retired western actor turned drunk was going to play the Gene Wilder part, but he was too drunk and vomiting to act. Go figure.

The line that I have I have most often used in my capacity as an amateur internet pundit is "Gentlemen, we have to protect our phoney-baloney jobs."
