That appears to be a very well built bass guitar.

I never understood the desire to smash one's instrument. I could see some big act like The Who doing it, since they were rich as shit and could afford to waste a few hundred dollars on a new bass every show, but these little punk/metal acts that do it always confused me. I thought they were supposed to be broke and starving.

kiint - 2008-10-13

guitarwolf was pretty popular within their genre, I think he could afford another bass.

He's really giving it his all though, superior even to the Townshend style...5 stahs!

Cena_mark - 2008-10-13

I'm a bassist and I can break a bass with one swing. That dude is a pussy.

kiint - 2008-10-13

that is the mark of TRUE BASS PLAYING SKILL

pussies need not apply

lemmyisgod - 2008-10-13

I did this once when very drunk on a bass that was soon to get a new body.

I must say, Fenders are crap for smashing. That bolt on neck makes it tough. Pete Townsend actually switched to Gibsons for just that reason- the set necks broke beautifully (and could often be fixed for the finale of the next gig by a good roadie).

I can't condone his Rickenbacker smashing though. Fortunately most of them just required new body "wings" as a lot of them were neck through.

Cena_mark - 2008-10-13

Pussies need not apply. If you're weak then play a guitar with its puny little strings. Or better yet Billy Basswolf should have picked up a viola instead.

Keefu - 2008-10-13

cena_mark please stop trying to cause a ruckus in the comments for my video, thanks

Cena_mark - 2008-10-13

Sorry Keefu, I'll change my tone.

OMG BILLYBASSWOLF IS SO AWESOME!!! I wish he wasn't dead!!!

Keefu - 2008-10-13

indeed

OxygenThief - 2016-05-30

Why don't you make like a bass player and be inaudible.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-30

Pete Townsend switched FROM Gibsons to fenders because the 1970-72 line of Gibons changed the neck design a lot and he hated it(I learned about this IDing a 1970 SG I found years ago).

The whole breaking the guitar thing was an accident originally and the crowd responded so well he kept doing it.

Fenders aren't unusually strong, pre 1970 SGs are just unusually weak because of poor design choices in the neck joint and headstock (that's why Les Paul had his name taken off of them right away). Almost the entire neck tenon is routed out to make room for the pickup. You could probably literally break the neck off of a strung mid 60s SG with just your hands. That's also why they don't stay in tune at all (which was a part of Townshend's playing style at the time).

Not only was this vid apparently taken a week or so before his death, but apparently he's smashing the guitar he used for most of his career in Guitar Wolf, as the youtube comments indicate. Some van poured vodka all over him and he was pretty pissed.

Keefu - 2008-10-13

*some fan

Dinkin Flicka - 2008-10-14

I'm a bouncer, and I'll go to Cena_Mark's show and beat the shit out of him as he plays bass crappily to the applause of the masses. Women surely will toss their unmentionables at me as I strangle him with six puny guitar strings.

Jet Bin Fever - 2009-06-25

Hey, I shot this video and uploaded it to Youtube... hoorah.

And yeah, Keefu has it right... it was a beer though, not vodka, but same effect.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2013-03-27

Somebody in the audience just scored a sweet bass guitar

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-30

I saw Acid Mothers Temple do this in 2002 and some middle aged woman scored a guitar in the side of the head. It's really lucky she wasn't seriously hurt.
