Wow, so Chris Columbus does ruin everything he touches.

Oh how i remember this... six years old and with a bootlegged copy of this movie on VHS... it was like acid for preschoolers.

Little Nemo kicks ass.

I think that this is anime that sucks.
This classic should not have been made in a conventional anime studio style. yucky poo.

fatatty - 2009-07-20

Ghibli is not a conventional anime studio. It's the most respected anime studio out there.

I think Winsor McCay would be fine with Miyazaki directing a film of his character. They even went with a more American style for the character. And you can't complain about a lack of quality animation in there.

shut. down.

In fairness, Chris Columbus had very little to do with the Little Nemo movie. Originally, the project began as something he had written and something that might turn out to be his first project as a director, but the production moved so slowly that he went on to do something else in the meantime. Meanwhile, as it was obvious that more experienced and talented Japanese animators were handling the whole thing, most of the Hollywood origins of the film were buried underneath efforts by those people, but under the usual ridiculous union rules of screenwriting and such, Chris Columbus still gets credit for the screenplay even though the end product used very little of it and was extensively re-written. In terms of "directing" Columbus had absolutely nothing to do with the movie. Ghibli wasn't involved in the end, but neither was he.

It's kind of like when Alex Cox tries to put Fear and Loathing on this resume, even though his screenplay was, in fact, never used for the movie. It's just his name is still on the film because of these dumb union rules.
