Here's a Republican who gets it. When it all boils down to it, I can understand fiscal conservatives. I don't agree, but I understand and even come to some middle ground without losing. But it's the social conservatives I cannot come to terms with. So when a Republican like Kriesel here not only votes against a gay marriage ban but gives such an impassioned speech to boot, I can unreservedly applaud him.

Kudos, sir.

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

This is where I'm at odds with the Republicans, this is why I call myself a libertarian. Limbaugh has even said he doesn't want guys like me in the Republican Party because we don't stand with them on the "Moral" issues.
I'm proud to say I voted against Georgia's gay marriage ban. Even if it passed on a 3 to 1 ratio.
This dude deserves more than 5 stars.

baleen - 2011-05-23

"this is why I call myself a libertarian"
Oh really! You just continue to reinvent yourself, don't you!

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

I've always called myself a Libertarian. I just vote Republican most of the time because in this economy we don't need spendocrats running things.
Plus there's a bunch of other dorks here on PoeTV who keep telling me I'm not a Libertarian because I never read Atlas Shrugged or some shit like that.

baleen - 2011-05-23

No, you're not a libertarian because you don't actually know what it is. If you did, you would never vote Republican.

baleen - 2011-05-23

There was also a time where you spouted anti-gay shit all over the place and seemed to be proud of your redneck roots. Maybe you're growing up or something, but you're still pretty dumb.

aikimoe - 2011-05-23

Calling yourself a libertarian and voting for most Republicans is like calling yourself a liberal and voting for most Democrats.

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

I vote Republican in the name of pragmatism. Bob Barr didn't have a prayer. I wasn't going to waste my vote on the dork who ate Borat's cheese. If I'm not a Libertarian, Republican, or a Democrat what am I? Out of the labels Libertarian fits me the best I'm sticking to it. There are varying degrees of Libertarianism. I'm just not as anarchistic as others.
aIkimoe: Don't libs vote democrat? If that's not what true liberals are supposed to do who should they vote for.
Baleen: I never spouted anti gay stuff. I've made gay jokes and have made fun of them, but I've always stood up for their rights. And I'm southern, not a redneck.

Second row, second column from the left.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-05-23

Mark, I see what you are saying but thing is you don't have to take a label or even need one. Do what you want to do and not what you feel you need to do in order to keep that label on yourself.

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

Mother puncher, labels are important. What if you went to the grocery store and none of the soup cans had labels? How would you tell the chicken noodle from the creamed corn? I need a label that says this guy agrees with republican on fiscal policy, but more with democrats on social policy, and doesn't like gun control.

futurebot - 2011-05-23

"I can understand fiscal conservatives. I don't agree, but I understand and even come to some middle ground without losing."

lol, you lose

aikimoe - 2011-05-23

Cena, people who claim to be liberal often vote for Democrats, most of whom are not liberal. Who should they vote for? I have no idea. Many people who identify as libertarian refuse to be part of the Libertarian Party because it's just awful, which is the same reason everyone should refuse to be part of the Republican and Democratic parties.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-05-23

That would be a wonderful analogy, mark, if people were just produce. I'm not going to get in a discussion over why labeling yourself as something is stupid but I will tell you that I think it's stupid and childish. People are constantly changing and so are their ideals.

misterbuns - 2011-05-23

Most of the opposition to the things social conservatives refer to as 'moral issues' will be literally six feet underground within 10 years.

baleen - 2011-05-23

That's why they're "conservative." Because they are for the way things were before things that are happening now happened. When it gets nice and comfortable for them, then they co-opt it, i.e., the Civil Rights movement.

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

That's why they're merely delaying the inevitable. People will look at these republicans in a way similar to that of the southern democrats of the 60s.

baleen - 2011-05-25

You're right! In fact, they WERE the Southern Democrats of the 60's. You fucking donkey.

phalsebob - 2011-05-23

Should we really pat this guy on the back for not shitting on the carpet? I guess so, if that's where American politics are at.

kingarthur - 2011-05-23

"That'll do, pig."

Cena_mark - 2011-05-23

Its cause he's a Republican. Saying such things are not expected of him, but rather going above and beyond.

phalsebob - 2011-05-24

I shower every day!

Senator_Unger - 2011-05-23

He gets a gold star.

StanleyPain - 2011-05-23

No one should be surprised this is a Republican. There are actually a lot of fairly reasonable Republicans out there. Their obsession with Reagan-era financial politics escapes me and I don't agree with it, but there are plenty of Republicans who don't give a shit about these kinds of social issues and don't want to tarnish their lives and careers with courting the batshit insanity of the far right and the tea party. You don't hear about them much because they don't get to be on the TV as much because Republicans doing socially progressive things isn't as interesting as morons who will say ridiculous shit to get crazy people to vote for them.

citrusmirakel - 2011-05-23

To say the ban "passed" is kind of misleading. This was for a ballot initiative to change the state constitution.

Which is gonna make for a really nasty fight in 2012, but I don't think it's gonna pass.

Xiphias - 2011-05-24

The ban passed through the state legislature. So it passed.

I explicitly stated in the comments that it still faces a ballot vote.

Explodotron - 2011-05-23

This is never going to pass. Minnesota is far too liberal for it too pass. Only state Reagan didn't get in his re-election. The song "Funky Town" is about Minneapolis, because Minneapolis is gay... *really* gay. People fly rainbow flags openly next to their American flags on their porches. Pride parades are a nuisance to commuters do to their frequency and spontaneity. The majority of the people that are going to vote "yes" are the richers in Maple Grove, Eden Prairie and the like... as well as the hinterlands. St. Cloud is a toss up, a weird mixture of white trash and annoying college kids. I will be voting no. My only question is how a blank ballot will count. I guess we will see in 2012.

I loathe the thought of the upcoming ad campaigns.

sosage - 2011-05-24

Most Californians I know thought Prop 8 didn't have any chance at all and was going to be the easiest swat down of a prop ever, yet it vomited its way through. I wouldn't, unfortunately, count your chickens on this issue...
